Speculation is growing about the status of The Batman sequel. Andy Serkis has offered some welcome reassurance. The actor plays Alfred Pennyworth. He confirmed that The Batman Part 2 is still in development. It remains in the capable hands of director Matt Reeves.
Andy Serkis Shares Clear Update on The Batman Part 2
While attending the 2025 Sardegna Festival in Italy, Serkis spoke with MoviePlayer and confidently stated:
“I am absolutely certain you will see The Batman 2. I know that the script is being finished at the moment. Matt Reeves is a formidable and wonderful filmmaker. And he would not want it to go forward until, in his mind, the script is where it needs to be. He’s one of the most exacting and dedicated storytellers that I’ve worked with. And so I can assure you that there will be another one.”
Why the Delay?
Although fans originally expected The Batman Part 2 to arrive much sooner, the team has now scheduled its release for October 1, 2027 — five years after the 2022 debut. Unsurprisingly, this delay sparked concern, with some fans speculating that the film had slipped into development hell.
However, Serkis’ remarks confirm that the delay isn’t due to cancellation but because Matt Reeves is carefully refining the script. This approach matches his reputation as a meticulous storyteller.
What We Know So Far
Here’s what the team has confirmed — and what rumors continue to suggest — about the sequel:
- The film exists outside of James Gunn’s new DCU and continues Reeves’ gritty “Epic Crime Saga.”
- HBO Max’s The Penguin, starring Colin Farrell, will directly connect to Part 2.
- Villains like Sofia Falcone (played by Cristin Milioti) are expected to return.
- No new casting announcements or major plot reveals have been made yet.
- Reeves is actively crafting another intricate, slow-burn crime thriller.
Why Andy Serkis’ Comments Matter for The Batman Part 2
Matt Reeves earned widespread acclaim for his precise storytelling in films like Let Me In and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Likewise, fans praised The Batman for its moody atmosphere, complex characters, and grounded tone. Given that legacy, it’s clear Reeves won’t rush these carefully crafted elements in the sequel.
Andy Serkis’ affirmation strengthens this vision. His words make it clear: the team isn’t delaying The Batman Part 2— they’re actively perfecting it.
The good news is that the studio hasn’t canceled The Batman Part 2. On the contrary, the team is intentionally taking more time — and that’s actually a promising sign. More importantly, Matt Reeves remains fully committed to delivering a sequel that not only matches but potentially exceeds the high standards set by the first film.
Now that the script is nearly complete and The Penguin series is actively expanding the world, the Batverse isn’t slowing down. Instead, it’s simply waiting in the shadows — ready to strike when the time is right.
