Avengers: Doomsday’s Delay May Be a Gift to DCU’s Supergirl

Avengers: Doomsday delay

Recently, Marvel Studios has officially pushed back the release of Avengers: Doomsday from May 1, 2026 to December 16, 2026. Although this is disappointing for some MCU fans, the Avengers: Doomsday delay might be the best news yet for DC Studios.

Why? Because it clears the path for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow to dominate summer 2026 with little to no superhero competition.

What the Avengers: Doomsday Delay Means for Supergirl

Original Release Schedule

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is currently slated for release on June 26, 2026 — just eight weeks after the original Avengers: Doomsday date. With the Avengers: Doomsday delay now clearing the schedule, Supergirl finds itself as the only major superhero release in the spring/summer window.

As a result, that’s a rare luxury in today’s franchise-heavy world.

Supergirl Can Now Own the Spotlight

In recent years, superhero fatigue has become a genuine concern. Consequently, audiences are more selective, and crowded release calendars often leave films gasping for attention. Fortunately, Supergirl may now get something most DC films haven’t: a solo stage.

Even better, Warner Bros. could go bold and move Supergirl to May 1 — the traditional MCU launchpad.

Why the Avengers: Doomsday Delay Makes a May 1 Move Genius

For nearly two decades, Marvel has owned the first weekend of May, using it to launch iconic blockbusters such as:

  • Iron Man (2008)
  • Avengers (2012)
  • Captain America: Civil War (2016)
  • Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

If that trend is disrupted, and if Warner Bros. claims that spot for Supergirl, they could:

  • Immediately steal early summer momentum
  • Confidently signal a bold new era for DC
  • Ultimately gain a longer, less crowded box office run

Building DC Brand Confidence

As the second film in James Gunn’s new DCU, following Superman (July 2025), Supergirl must do more than entertain — more importantly, it must prove that DC Studios has a unified vision.

By owning a premiere slot like May 1, DC would send a clear message to both fans and investors that it is ready to compete, not just follow.

What We Know About the Supergirl Film

Notably, Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) stars as Kara Zor-El in a space-bound, emotional journey based on Tom King’s graphic novel.

Meanwhile, director Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Cruella) leads the film with a bold supporting cast:

  • Jason Momoa as Lobo
  • Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem

Notably, Gillespie’s grounded yet stylized direction could provide the perfect contrast to the cosmic, introspective tone of Supergirl’s story.

While the Avengers: Doomsday delay might frustrate Marvel fans, for DC, it’s a valuable chance to reshape the narrative. If Warner Bros. acts strategically, Supergirl could emerge as the breakout comic book film of summer 2026.

Furthermore, maybe — just maybe — it’s the turning point the DCU has been waiting for.
