Warner Bros. has quietly shelved the Catwoman DC prequel project. Warner Bros. actively developed the film but canceled it amid a major corporate strategy shift. Swaybox Studios created the project for HBO Max, intending to focus on a young Selina Kyle during her childhood years. Fans were eager to see a fresh take on the iconic character. Early concept art and reports generated significant online buzz.
Catwoman Prequel Development Details
Swaybox’s Arthur Mintz shared in an interview:
“We were greenlit to make a project for HBO Max, a feature film based on Catwoman as a kid.”
Three months into development, Warner Bros. canceled the project in 2022 during a massive content purge. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. Mintz confirmed:
“He canceled 42 projects, including ours.”
The sudden cancellation left fans and creators disappointed, as the project promised to explore Selina Kyle’s origins in a way not previously seen in live-action or animated formats.
A Glimmer of Hope for Catwoman’s Story
Despite the cancellation, the concept may not be entirely dead. Matt Reeves, director of The Batman, saw the footage, created a sizzle reel, and showed it to Zaslav. Zaslav reportedly liked what he saw but felt the project needed a “larger story.”
The studio may incorporate the concept into another project. Swaybox now develops The Dynamic Duo, an animated film featuring young Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. They could retool the young Selina Kyle concept for this film, giving audiences a chance to see her origin story in a fresh format.
While the standalone Catwoman prequel movie is not in active development, fans should stay attentive to upcoming DC projects. Animated films like The Dynamic Duo are becoming a popular way for studios to explore character backstories without committing to a full live-action feature. This approach may let filmmakers finally depict Selina Kyle’s early adventures on screen.
Catwoman Legacy
Catwoman, created in 1940, has been portrayed by actresses including Michelle Pfeiffer, Halle Berry, Anne Hathaway, and Zoë Kravitz. Each portrayal has brought a unique interpretation to the character, highlighting her complexity as both a villain and an antihero.
Regarding the prequel, the positive reception to its concept leaves the door open for a version of the story to eventually be told within a different DC project. Fans continue to hope that Selina’s origin story will eventually make it to the screen.
In short, while audiences will have to wait to see young Selina Kyle on screen, the Catwoman concept may yet find a home in future DC animated or live-action projects. With talented creative teams and ongoing fan interest, the essence of this prequel could be adapted in ways that enrich the broader DC Universe.
