Just before San Diego Comic-Con 2025, DC Studios surprised fans with an unexpected and exciting reveal. If DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran approve the script, then David Jenkins could also step in as the showrunner. Meanwhile, this update comes after the exit of original showrunner Danny McBride (The Righteous Gemstones), who reportedly left the project after “falling out of love” with it.

Booster Gold Joins the Expanding DCU Series Lineup

First announced in early 2023 as part of DCU Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, Booster Gold is finally gaining traction. In a recent interview, Blue Beetle actor Xolo Maridueña confirmed that Kumail Nanjiani, known for his role in Eternals, will star as the title character.

Booster Gold, also known as Michael Jon Carter, is a former football star from the 25th century. Using stolen advanced technology, he travels back in time. Initially, he seeks fame and public attention. However, as his journey progresses, he gradually transforms into a true protector of justice.

“We’re not quite there yet in terms of Booster Gold. The scripts aren’t quite where I want them to be,”

James Gunn’s Mission to Spotlight Underrated DC Heroes

Although James Gunn doesn’t typically favor time-travel stories, he nonetheless appears genuinely excited about Booster Gold’s potential. In addition, ongoing rumors suggest that the series may take place in the present day. Even more intriguingly, it could also feature a potential team-up with Blue Beetle.

“The goal from the beginning was to give the honor that the great characters deserved—the Wonder Womans, Batmans, and Supermans,” Gunn said.
“But then also to prop up these lesser-known characters like Peacemaker, Booster Gold, and The Huntress.”

In the comics, Booster Gold is notably a long-time member of the Justice League International. Interestingly, this connection may not be coincidental. In fact, James Gunn could be hinting at it through Superman’s rumored “Justice Gang,” which may serve as the DCU’s version of the team.
