DCU Show Replaces James Gunn as Head Writer

James Gunn has confirmed he is not returning as writer for Season 2 of Creature Commandos, the animated DCU show. He wrote all seven episodes of Season 1. However, this time, he’s stepping back to focus on his broader responsibilities within the newly launched DC Universe.

Although no longer penning scripts, Gunn will continue to serve as an executive producer, overseeing the creative process to ensure consistency and quality.

Why James Gunn Stepped Away from This DCU Show

The reason behind this shift lies in Gunn’s packed schedule. As co-CEO of DC Studios, he actively leads the development of the wider DCU, including the upcoming Superman film. In an earlier statement, Gunn admitted:

“I would never do it again,”

referring to the intense workload of writing, directing, and managing multiple projects.

Now, Dean Lorey is leading the newly formed writers’ room for Season 2. Lorey, who previously collaborated with Gunn, aims to maintain the show’s unique tone and style.

Can the DCU Show Maintain Its Quality Without Gunn Writing?

Understandably, some fans are concerned about the shift in creative leadership. After all, Creature Commandos Season 1 earned a 95% critic score and 80% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Now that Gunn is stepping away from writing, the pressure is undoubtedly on to meet the high expectations set by the first season.

However, HBO Max executive Amy Gravitt expressed full confidence in the team:

“Only James Gunn could have conjured this wild band of misfit monsters who tug at your heart and force you to root passionately for them. This strong support suggests that while the writing hand is changing, the heart of the story remains intact.

When Will Season 2 Be Released?

The animated DCU show is reportedly on a fast track for development. However, DC Studios hasn’t announced an official release date yet. If production continues without delays, fans may expect Season 2 to premiere sometime in 2026.
