James Gunn has finally explained why fans will have to wait longer to see DCU’s Batman in The Brave and the Bold. Although the DC Universe’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters is already underway, Gotham’s iconic hero remains absent from the initial slate.

Unfortunately for fans, Gunn has confirmed that DCU’s Batman will not arrive until at least 2028—and possibly even later, due to ongoing script development and strategic release planning.

DCU’s Batman Script Is Still Incomplete

The primary reason for the delay is that the script for The Brave and the Bold is still unfinished. Gunn reassured fans on Threads:

“I’m dependent on when there’s an actionable script ready, so there is no way of me guessing this.”

This careful approach ensures that DCU’s Batman receives a story worthy of the character’s importance in the cinematic universe. Fans shouldn’t worry about production moving too quickly, as the team is taking time to develop a compelling, interconnected narrative.

Avoiding Overlap With The Batman Part II

Timing is another key factor behind the wait for DCU’s Batman. Matt Reeves will release The Batman Part II, starring Robert Pattinson, in theaters on October 1, 2027. Gunn emphasized the importance of spacing projects:

“Also, frankly, we’re well into Batman 2, and I wouldn’t want to cloud the Batsphere until after that.”

By staggering releases, DC Studios ensures that each Batman story stands on its own and avoids confusing audiences about which version belongs to the main DCU.

Gunn Responds to Fans About Batman’s Importance

Some fans accused Gunn of undervaluing Batman within the DCU. He responded decisively:

“I think both Batman and Wonder Woman are incredibly important.”

He added:

“But I’m also not going to have two Batman movies come out in the same year.”

This statement highlights the studio’s thoughtful strategy, as it gives DCU’s Batman the space and attention needed to thrive without being overshadowed.

How Elseworlds Batman Differs From DCU’s Batman

It’s important to note that The Batman Part II exists outside the main DCU timeline as a standalone Elseworlds story. Matt Reeves directs this version of Batman, with Robert Pattinson starring as Bruce Wayne, and the film follows an independent storyline that is not connected to the broader shared universe, allowing for a more self-contained and grounded narrative.

The Brave and the Bold will officially introduce DCU’s Batman into the core continuity. Directed by Andy Muschietti, this iteration of the Dark Knight will be fully integrated with upcoming DCU films and characters. This clear distinction allows fans to enjoy multiple interpretations of Batman at the same time, while also keeping the main cinematic universe cohesive and easy to follow.

Upcoming Batman Projects for Fans

While DCU’s Batman won’t arrive until 2028, Batman fans still have plenty to look forward to. DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation are adapting the legendary Batman: Knightfall storyline into a multi-part animated film series.

The first installment, Batman: Knightfall – Part 1, will release in 2026. Jeff Wamester, known for Justice Society: World War II, directs the animated film, while Jeremy Adams, who previously worked on Supernatural, writes the script. Additionally, fans can expect more DC animated projects and potential tie-ins in the coming years, ensuring that the Dark Knight remains active across multiple formats while audiences wait for his return to live-action.

Although the wait may be frustrating, DC Studios’ cautious approach could ultimately benefit DCU’s Batman. By prioritizing script quality and strategic timing, the studio aims to deliver a definitive and well-crafted version of the Dark Knight.
