Henry Cavill says that he is excited for DC’s Black Superman film, saying that Superman is “more than skin color.”
Man of Steel’s Henry Cavill Shared his thoughts regarding DC’s upcoming black superman. Earlier this year, DC announced that they would be developing a new Superman movie with black lead. This movie will be scripted by occasional comic writer Ta-Nehisi Coates along with Star Wars’ JJ Abrams producing.
This news met with mixed reception that they would rather see lesser explored Black DC characters receive their own films rather than simply race-swapping Clark Kent (who is usually depicted as white in the comics).
The racial reception that had arised made the Zack Snyders DC films to get worried, thinking that the new Superman may spell doom for Cavill’s incarnation of the character.
Zack Snyders version of DC pantheon heroes’ is very much opposite to traditional depictions. His vision was departing of Superman quite significantly from the usual cheery and optimistic characterization that appears in most Superman stories.
While Cavill’s portrayal as an iconic Kryptonian hasn’t been immune to criticism. Many of the Cavills’ harsh critics admit that he could potentially progress under a different writing team. This definitely seems him to be optimistic.
In an recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Cavill shared his candid thoughts about black Superman project as:
It’s exciting — Superman’s far more than skin color. Superman is an ideal. Superman’s an extraordinary thing that lives within our hearts. Why not have multiple Supermen going on? Joaquin Phoenix did a wonderful Joker movie; so what if it’s not tied to the rest of [the franchise]? They have multiple Superman comic book storylines happening at the same time.
There is always space for different color’s of Superman, but the fear is regarding the audience acceptance. While the DC’s Joker proven that the audiences are quicker than the studios thoughts. Cavill’s superman could coexist new black superman just as Phoenix’s tragic Joker set itself apart from Jared Leto’s chaotic interpretation of the character.
Although the Black Superman remains to be a controversial topic, all is about done only with its execution. Miles Morales is an best example as he faced a lot of criticism when he took up mantle of Spider man which later became the most iconic hero of Marvel. We can also hope that Coates and Abrams’ will be able to do the same for their version of the Man of Steel.
