For years, fans of Zack Snyder’s mythic DC Universe have debated where the Snyderverse ends and the DCEU begins — especially with James Gunn’s new DCU on the horizon. What Is (and Isn’t) the Snyderverse? A Source of Canon Confusion

The Snyderverse specifically refers to the interconnected storyline that Zack Snyder developed within the DCEU. It began with Man of Steel (2013), then continued with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and finally culminated in Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021).

Snyder’s arc leaned into a darker, mythological tone, with epic plans involving Darkseid, Knightmare timelines, and a growing Justice League. However, the DCEU quickly expanded beyond Snyder’s creative vision, with films like Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Shazam!, and Birds of Prey shifting tone and diverging from his overarching story.

As a result, fans now view the Snyderverse as a subset of the DCEU — not the whole universe. This distinction has fueled years of Snyderverse Canon Confusion among fans.

Why Snyderverse Characters Continued — and Fueled Snyderverse Canon Confusion

Even after Snyder departed, key actors like Henry Cavill (Superman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Jason Momoa (Aquaman), and Ezra Miller (The Flash) remained part of DCEU projects. Warner Bros. chose to retain them due to their popularity and to avoid the financial risk of recasting.

  • Aquaman (2018) was a massive box office hit, earning over $1 billion.
  • The Flash (2023) featured both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton as Batman.
  • Shazam! directly referenced Justice League events from Snyder’s films.

These overlapping timelines and character carryovers blurred the boundaries between Snyder’s original vision and the broader DCEU. That confusion continued into James Gunn’s early involvement — until now.

Peacemaker: A Bridge Between the Snyderverse and the DCU

James Gunn’s Peacemaker Season 1 (2022) was still set in the DCEU and even featured Snyderverse cameos — including Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Ezra Miller’s Flash. This made it feel like a continuation of the old universe.

However, that’s about to change.

With the full DC Universe (DCU) reboot underway under Gunn and Peter Safran, Peacemaker Season 2 will officially exist in the new DCU continuity. This makes it one of the rare properties to serve as a narrative bridge — connecting the past (Snyderverse/DCEU) to the future (DCU).

Peacemaker: The Official Podcast Will Clarify Snyderverse Canon Confusion

To help untangle the lingering Snyderverse Canon Confusion, James Gunn has officially confirmed the launch of Peacemaker: The Official Podcast, which premieres on July 24. Starting then, new episodes will drop regularly, every Monday and Thursday, continuing through August 18.

The podcast will revisit Season 1 and clarify which moments still count as canon in the DCU — and which ones no longer do. Gunn previously described The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker as being seen through “unreliable memories” in the new continuity. In other words, some elements will stay, while others will change.

One confirmed change: the Justice League cameo in Peacemaker Season 1 will no longer be canon in the DCU.

The podcast will be hosted by Gunn himself, along with appearances from cast members like Jennifer Holland (Emilia Harcourt) and Steve Agee (John Economos). Additionally, special guests will include John Cena, Danielle Brooks, Robert Patrick, and Chukwudi Iwuji.

Will Peacemaker Rewrite Its Own History?

DC Studios teased that Peacemaker Season 2 will introduce the Justice Gang — a new team of DCU heroes. Peacemaker will audition to join Maxwell Lord’s squad.

This gives Gunn a chance to rewrite Season 1’s ending through flashbacks. He could replace the Snyderverse’s Justice League with the DCU’s Justice Gang.

It’s a smart way to fix continuity while honoring fan-favorite moments. It also signals a clear break from the past without pushing fans away.

What’s Next for DC and Peacemaker?

The podcast will continue after Season 2 premieres on August 21, offering deep dives into each new episode. It will also serve as the official guide to what is and isn’t canon in the DCU.

As the DCU launches with Creature Commandos and Superman (2025), Peacemaker Season 2 and its podcast will be the clearest roadmap for fans navigating the transition from the DCEU to Gunn’s unified vision.

So, whether you’re a Snyderverse loyalist, a longtime DCEU follower, or a new fan entering the DCU, the wait for answers to the Snyderverse Canon Confusion is almost over.
