James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, has officially revealed several DC Studios’ projects that are now in active development. With this announcement, fans are finally getting a clearer sense of the studio’s direction. Furthermore, this major update offers a thrilling preview of what’s to come in the newly restructured DC Universe (DCU), signaling a bold new era for the franchise.
Together, these projects represent a diverse and strategic creative direction — skillfully blending cosmic adventures, grounded detective stories, mythological world-building, and even gritty war dramas. As a result, the DCU promises a dynamic mix of tones and genres that can appeal to a wide range of audiences.
DC Studios’ Projects Officially in Motion
Looking ahead, Gunn also confirmed that several standout projects are now actively moving forward, each contributing to the broader vision of the DCU.
- Lanterns
This grounded, sci-fi detective series will focus on Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and John Stewart. According to Gunn, it’s one of the most crucial DC Studios’ projects for shaping the DCU’s overarching mystery. - Supergirl
Inspired by Supergirl, this film offers a darker take on Kara Zor-El. Unlike Superman, she has witnessed great suffering and loss, which makes her story grittier and more cosmic in tone. - Clayface
This new approach to the classic Batman villain will lean into horror and emotional storytelling, turning Clayface into a tragic, humanized character. - Brave and the Bold
The new Batman film will feature Bruce Wayne alongside his son, Damian Wayne, a trained assassin. This film will introduce the Bat-Family into the DCU for the very first time. - Wonder Woman
While still under wraps, this project is said to explore Themyscira and Amazonian lore, serving as a prelude to Diana Prince’s eventual arrival in the DCU. - Sgt. Rock
A surprising addition to the lineup, this gritty war project will focus on one of DC’s most iconic military characters. It adds a grounded, realistic layer to the broader universe. - The Batman Part II
Matt Reeves’ sequel, starring Robert Pattinson, continues under the Elseworlds label. Although separate from the main DCU, it remains a major part of Warner Bros.’ slate.
One DC Studios’ Project Currently on Hold
However, not everything is progressing at the same pace. In contrast to the actively developing titles, Gunn confirmed that The Authority—originally revealed during the announcement of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters—is “pretty much on hold.” Nevertheless, while the project remains close to Gunn’s heart, the studio is currently prioritizing foundational characters and narratives in order to establish a stronger base for the DCU.
Overall, this roadmap gives fans a much clearer understanding of the creative direction for DC Studios’ projects. From cosmic space tales and intense war dramas to horror-infused villain arcs and evolving superhero family dynamics, the DCU is shaping up to be a well-balanced universe. Moreover, it offers plenty of room not only for bold innovation but also for honoring long-standing traditions.
