James Gunn’s next DCU project remains undecided as the DC Studios co-CEO evaluates four potential options after Superman, showcasing his dedication to compelling storytelling. While Gunn has confirmed his involvement in pivotal projects like Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Lanterns, he has yet to settle on which film or series will next feature his directorial touch.
In a conversation with Collider, Gunn revealed his current creative dilemma: “I’ve got like four different things that I could do, and I’m going to kind of jump back and forth between those things. I’m going to see which one really speaks to me, and that’s the one I’m gonna do.”
“One thing that I’ve tried to make clear to people from the beginning is that everything in DC is going to be based on the writers,” he explained. “Until we have a screenplay that I’m totally happy with, that movie is not going to get made, no matter what it is.”
In addition to his work on Superman, which stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Gunn has directed episodes of Peacemaker Season 2, collaborating with notable filmmakers like Brad Anderson, Rosemary Rodriguez, and Jody Hill. He also disclosed that multiple R-rated DC projects are under consideration, with their ratings determined solely by the demands of the story.
“It’s not about testing out to see if this thing works,” Gunn clarified. “It’s just about telling a story. If a story is going to be R-rated, we’re totally okay with that. If it’s going to be PG, PG-13, or G, I don’t care — whatever is worthy of the story, that’s what we’re going to do.”
Superman promises to set the stage for the DC Universe’s new chapter. Featuring a stellar cast that includes Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabel Merced as Hawkgirl, and Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, the film will also introduce Milly Alcock’s Supergirl ahead of her solo movie. As Gunn wrapped up filming earlier this year, he reflected on the profound experience of bringing the project to life.
“The destination has been Superman, but the journey has been the toil and the laughter and the emotions and ideas and magic we’ve shared together on set — and for that, I am forever grateful,” Gunn shared in a heartfelt statement.
