James Gunn Hopes for Return of a DCEU Actress to His Rebooted Universe

By Shobith C Mar 16, 2024

As the first live-action movie of the rebooted DC Universe begins filming, all eyes are on director and co-CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn. Recently, Gunn has sparked intrigue by expressing his expectation for the return of a key actress from the rebooted universe to his new cinematic realm. The actress in question? Margot Robbie, renowned for her portrayal of the beloved anti-heroine, Harley Quinn.

Robbie’s recent remarks about potentially passing on the role of Harley Quinn in future DC Universe projects have stirred up considerable speculation among fans. Despite her openness to the idea of another actress embodying the character, Gunn has publicly voiced his desire for Robbie to continue her iconic portrayal.

Having essayed the role of Harley Quinn across multiple DC films, including “Suicide Squad,” its reboot “The Suicide Squad,” and “Birds of Prey,” Robbie’s comments to Variety highlighted her willingness to see Harley Quinn depicted by different actresses. She underscored the character’s versatility and the potential for diverse interpretations.

However, Gunn’s response to Robbie’s comments offers a ray of hope for fans invested in seeing her continue as Harley Quinn. While clarifying that he hasn’t recently discussed the matter with Robbie, Gunn expressed his keenness to collaborate with her once more, whether as Harley or in a different capacity.

In response to a fan query regarding Harley Quinn’s future, Gunn shared on Threads his enthusiasm for working with the “Barbie” star again, stating, “I haven’t talked to Margot about Harley for a long time. But I’d love to work with her again as Harley or as someone else.”

Gunn’s admission arrives following Robbie’s revelation that she always envisioned Harley Quinn as a character capable of being passed on to other actresses, akin to numerous iconic male characters. Robbie expressed this sentiment in a recent interview with Variety, stating, “I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters. That was always the dream for her.”

Gunn’s statement further clarified that, at present, there are no plans to recast Harley Quinn, except for specific projects like Todd Phillips’ Joker sequel, “Folie à Deux,” where Lady Gaga will portray a distinct iteration of the character. However, this does not guarantee Robbie’s reprisal of the role in Gunn’s revamped DC Universe.

The fluid nature of casting decisions within the entertainment industry underscores the need for caution when interpreting updates. While Gunn’s remarks offer insight into his preferences, the status of Robbie’s involvement remains uncertain until official announcements are made. Fans will eagerly await further developments in the ever-evolving landscape of the DC Universe, particularly regarding the fate of Harley Quinn and Margot Robbie’s potential return to the role.
