James Gunn Discusses His Initial Discomfort on Set

The scene in question features a kiss between Holland’s and Cena’s characters in the season finale. Gunn confessed,

“Before it happened, I was uncomfortable about it, admittedly. I was like, ‘I don’t want to do this.’”

He further explained the awkwardness of directing such a scene in front of a large audience:

“It wasn’t just directing the kiss, it was in front of, like, 200-300 extras or more, a lot of whom were fans. Just the whole thing was kind of weird.”

This insight reveals the personal and professional tension that can occur when a director is emotionally connected to the cast.

Technical Challenges Behind the Kiss Scene

Despite the discomfort, both Gunn and Holland emphasized the highly technical nature of the filming process. Holland remarked,

“It’s a weird experience. I mean, I also understand that it must be weird seeing your wife kiss another person. I don’t ever think about it like that, though. When two actors are on screen, it feels so technical.”

Gunn added,

“This was especially technical. We had the Phantom camera, and everything was in slow-motion. You guys had to go back in a certain way, and then you had to come together. Then the camera ramps down… And we had to do it over and over [again]. Then [Holland is] standing on the lazy Susan as we’re curling around you.”

These details highlight the precision and dedication required to capture the perfect cinematic moment.

How James Gunn Overcame His Discomfort

Despite initial hesitations, Gunn’s focus on the artistry of filmmaking helped him overcome personal awkwardness. He reflected,

“But then once we were doing it, I didn’t give a shit. I was totally fine. I was looking at the kiss as like, ‘I’m f—ing loving it,’ because it’s these beautiful shots. Some of our best shots ever in this series are in that sequence.”

His transparency about the emotional and technical challenges provides fans a unique behind-the-scenes perspective on creating such a memorable moment in Peacemaker Season 2.

All eight episodes of Peacemaker Season 2 are now streaming on HBO Max, offering viewers a mix of action, humor, and emotional depth. With Gunn’s careful direction and dedication to technical perfection, the series continues to push the boundaries of superhero storytelling.
