James Gunn, the CEO of DC Studios, recently shared an emotional social media post about his journey to direct the upcoming Superman Legacy film. In the post, Gunn revealed that he was initially offered the opportunity to direct Superman years ago, but turned it down because he didn’t have a unique and emotional way to approach the character.
However, less than a year ago, Gunn found a way in that he felt was special and centered around Superman’s heritage. He decided to take on writing the script and, despite being hesitant to direct, ultimately fell in love with the story and decided to commit to directing as well.
Gunn Wrote: “Yes, I’m directing Superman: Legacy to be released on July 11, 2025.” My brother Matt said, when he saw the release date, he started to cry. I asked him why. He said, “Dude, it’s Dad’s birthday.” I hadn’t realized. It has been a long road to this point. I was offered Superman years ago – I initially said no because I didn’t have a way in that felt unique and fun and emotional that gave Superman the dignity he deserved. Then a bit less than a year ago I saw a way in, in many ways centering around Superman’s heritage – how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes. So I chose to finally take on writing the script. But I was hesitant to direct, despite the constant pestering by Peter Safran and others to commit (sorry, Peter).Just because I write something doesn’t mean I feel it in my bones, visually and emotionally, enough to spend over two years directing it, especially not something of this magnitude. But, the long and the short of it is, I love this script, and I’m incredibly excited as we begin this journey.”
Gunn’s announcement of directing Superman: Legacy has already garnered excitement among fans of the iconic superhero. The release date of July 11, 2025, also holds a personal significance for Gunn and his family. As he shared in his social media post, the release date falls on his late father’s birthday, a fact that left his brother in tears.
The announcement of Gunn’s involvement in the film is also significant given his track record with blockbuster hits such as Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad. His unique blend of humor, heart, and action could bring a fresh perspective to the classic character of Superman.
Gunn’s approach to the film, centered around Superman’s heritage, could also offer a new lens through which to view the character. The duality of Superman’s upbringing – raised by both his Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents – has always been an integral part of his character, but could now be explored in a deeper and more emotional way.
Gunn’s journey to directing Superman: Legacy is a reminder that sometimes the best things in life come after a long road. His hesitation to direct the film until he truly felt it in his bones is a testament to his dedication to the story and character. Fans of Superman can look forward to a film that is not only visually stunning but emotionally resonant as well.
As Gunn begins his journey to direct Superman: Legacy, fans can follow along with updates and behind-the-scenes glimpses on his social media accounts. The excitement for this film is already palpable, and it’s sure to be a superhero adventure for the ages.
