James Gunn has finally spoken out about Aquaman’s DCU Status, and his comments may surprise fans of the underwater hero. During a recent appearance on Peacemaker: The Official Podcast, the host asked Gunn about Jason Momoa’s Aquaman. They wanted to know if the character counts as canon in the newly rebooted DC Universe. His answer was cautious but clear:
“Is Aquaman canon? We don’t know, but I don’t think Aquaman is canon.”
Aquaman’s DCU Status Remains Unclear
According to Gunn, Peacemaker Season 2 will be part of the official DCU canon, while Season 1—which referenced Aquaman—was created before his leadership. This presents a clear continuity conflict. Gunn explained that for Aquaman’s Dcu Status to remain intact, the DC timeline would need significant adjustments. He added:
“It’s unlikely that Aquaman is a famous hero in the DCU as Superman and Peacemaker Season 2 is happening.”
In other words, incorporating Aquaman as a major figure in the current DCU would require bending the rules of the universe Gunn is working hard to define. Given the structured direction of the new DCU, this seems unlikely.
Aquaman’s DCU Status and Timeline Conflicts
The DCU’s newly established timeline further casts doubt on Aquaman’s DCU status. According to Gunn, metahumans have existed publicly for over 300 years. However, since Arthur Curry’s version of Aquaman only recently emerged in the now-concluded DCEU, his origin doesn’t fit within the new continuity. This mismatch makes it difficult to logically place his story in the reimagined timeline.
Jason Momoa’s Shift to Lobo
Adding to the speculation, Jason Momoa is confirmed to appear as Lobo in the upcoming Supergirl (2026) film. As a result, this move strongly indicates that Momoa’s time as Aquaman has ended and that he’s stepping into a new, more fitting role within the DCU. Not only does this align with Gunn’s reboot strategy, but it also allows Momoa to explore a character more closely suited to his personality and energy.
Podcast Briefly Available, Now Pulled
Interestingly, the Peacemaker: The Official Podcast episode where Gunn discussed Aquaman was only briefly available before being removed from major platforms. This has only fueled more speculation regarding Aquaman’s DCU status and whether Gunn’s comments were too revealing.
Although Aquaman remains the highest-grossing film in the DCEU, its sequel underperformed both critically and financially. With the DCU now taking a new narrative path, it seems likely that the King of Atlantis may not make the journey forward.
