“We all know it’s been a f**ked up”

DC Studios boss James Gunn has recently been candid about the former DCEU SnyderVerse and past DC Comics films. Gunn’s comments came shortly after the launch of the new era of DC adaptations, which he is helming.
“I wanted to take care of these characters,” Gunn stated. “We all know it’s been a f**ked up road for many of them, for the past few years […] and I really thought it is a challenge, but I think it’s a possibility to create something really wonderful with these characters.”

The SnyderVerse refers to the universe established by director Zack Snyder in his DC adaptations. This universe included movies like “Man of Steel,” “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” and “Justice League: Snyder Cut.” However, the SnyderVerse will no longer be part of the new DC Universe franchise.

“The history has been shit! It’s been a real f**ked up journey for DC,” Gunn stated. “I think that there was basically no one minding the mint and they were giving out IP to any creative that smiled at whoever was in charge. There was never any real power given to the people in charge, and so somebody could always go over their head and do whatever they wanted.”
Gunn also talked about the issue of continuity in the previous DC adaptations. “We had the DCEU, which then became the Joss Whedon Justice League but it also became the Snyderverse, which became this. And then we have Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 2, which doesn’t even match what happened in Wonder Woman 1 and then we have the Arrowverse and even us coming in with The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker and y’know what is it exactly? And all of a sudden Bat-Mite’s a real guy. So how can we take these things together and make them make sense and have them unified and have them be one real universe – one real world.”
Gunn’s criticism of the previous DC adaptations is not unfounded, as Warner Bros. has been trying to compete with Marvel Studios’ Avengers-based universe for years. However, the Marvel Cinematic Universe took its time building out its billion-dollar franchise, while the DCEU attempted to take a shortcut to success.
James Gunn’s comments provide a clear understanding of the challenges that come with establishing a new DC Universe franchise. However, with Gunn at the helm, there is hope that the studio can turn things around and deliver a unified and coherent universe that fans can be proud of.
