James Gunn Confirms The Authority Is Still Alive

One of the DC Universe’s toughest projects may finally be moving forward. James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, shared a promising update on a DCU project. Development on the film has stalled since January 2023.

Superman and Peacemaker Season 2 lead the DCU slate in 2025. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Clayface, and Lanterns are lined up for 2026. Fans are eager to know what’s next in Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. Beyond Man of Tomorrow (2027) and The Batman Part II, the roadmap is still largely undefined, especially for certain projects.

Since Superman introduced Angela Spica (a.k.a. The Engineer, played by María Gabriela de Faría), speculation has swirled around The Authority. In early 2025, Gunn admitted it was “the hardest DCU project to get right.” But now, in a new interview with Deadline, Gunn revealed:

“There’s someone who is a really good creator who talked to me the other day.”

James Gunn Hints at Possible Format Changes for The Authority

When asked if the project could become a TV show, Gunn didn’t confirm or deny. He did hint at challenges with launching obscure characters in theaters.

“Who knows. I’m probably not going to do certain movies with characters who (audiences) don’t know; it’s harder to get people in the theater for that kind of thing.”

This suggests that a streaming series might be a stronger option, allowing audiences to fully explore the team’s storylines in depth — something that’s harder to achieve in a single movie.

What This Update Means for the Future of the DCU

While the format of The Authority remains uncertain, Gunn’s update reassures fans that the project still has a place in the DCU. Other projects, including Waller and Paradise Lost, have also faced delays, while Sgt. Rock remains stalled. Meanwhile, DC Studios is prioritizing The Brave and the Bold and a new Wonder Woman film.

Whether it eventually arrives as a feature film or a series, fans can expect James Gunn to carefully develop this darker, edgier team. This attention to detail is consistent with how the DCU has approached complex narratives, ensuring audiences are engaged and invested in each character’s journey.

The Authority Could Define a New Direction for DCU Stories

The potential for The Authority to debut as a streaming series could signal a broader strategy by DC Studios to explore lesser-known characters in a more serialized format. By doing so, fans will not only get a deeper understanding of the team but also experience a narrative style that complements the more blockbuster-driven releases like Superman and The Batman Part II.
