Supergirl Movie Title Officially Changed, Confirms James Gunn

James Gunn has confirmed the Supergirl movie’s title change, revealing that the upcoming film starring Milly Alcock will no longer carry its original title, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The film is now officially titled just Supergirl.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Gunn explained the reason for the change:

I’m sick of the superhero title, colon, other-name thing,” he said, adding that titles like Legacy or Woman of Tomorrow feel too backward-facing. “Even though I gave it that title, I just wasn’t sure.”

This move mirrors a similar change to the upcoming Superman film, which also dropped its “Legacy” subtitle earlier this year.

Why DC Dropped the Subtitle

Gunn revealed that he and the team made the decision during a strategic meeting held months before filming, known as a premortem. These sessions allow creative teams to identify potential pitfalls before production starts.

Legacy was really — we do something called a premortem. A premortem is you get together with your group that’s doing the project. It’s usually about a couple months before shooting, and you go, hypothetically, ‘If it’s an epic disaster, what are the things that we’re doing today that are going to cause it to be an epic disaster? Everyone here can speak freely.’”

As a result, according to Gunn, this kind of transparency helps avoid common mistakes often seen in other productions.

The things you find on other productions are the things that people are whispering. ‘Oh, God, I don’t know why they cast that actor — he doesn’t fit the role.’ Or, ‘The production designer’s never on time.’”

Gunn continued:

One of the things I brought up was, it was called Superman: Legacy. Even though I was the one that gave it that title, I just wasn’t sure. First of all, I’m sick of the superhero title, colon, other-name thing. And then also it seemed to be looking back when we’re looking forward, even though it does have to do with legacy in the movie itself. And everybody was like, ‘Oh, yeah, no, change it.’”

Gunn’s Role in Supergirl Movie’s Title Change and Production

Although James Gunn has been highly influential in shaping the new DC Universe, he clarified that his involvement in the Supergirl film was limited primarily to the script stage.

Very little,”

Gunn said when asked how much he was on set.

I mean at the very beginning, but I’ve been pretty busy, as you might imagine. I was really involved at the script stage, but then [director] Craig [Gillespie] has just been such a great partner. He’s just been doing his thing. You never know how something cuts together, but right now it looks amazing. It’s really cool stuff.”

What to Expect After the Supergirl Movie’s Title Change in 2026

Director Craig Gillespie, known for Cruella and I, Tonya, brings Milly Alcock to the screen as Kara Zor-El in her first appearance within the newly rebooted DC Universe. The film, scheduled to hit theaters on June 26, 2026, forms part of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Initially titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the project now goes by the simpler name Supergirl, reflecting the DCU’s shift toward a more forward-focused branding approach.
