James Gunn has shared his thoughts on the widely discussed Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix deal, and his response may surprise DC fans. While uncertainty surrounds the potential acquisition, Gunn has made it clear that he sees exciting possibilities ahead.
Recently, reports suggested that Netflix could be preparing to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, the company currently led by David Zaslav. Although the deal is far from finalized, the news has sparked widespread discussion across Hollywood. Naturally, this has led fans to question what the future may hold for DC Studios and its carefully planned cinematic universe.
James Gunn Responds to the Warner Bros. and Netflix Deal
Netflix previously announced plans that may eventually lead to the purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery. However, the companies have not finalized the details or officially confirmed the deal.
Warner Bros. Pictures owns DC Studios, and James Gunn and Peter Safran currently oversee the company.Because of this, fans have expressed concern over whether the DCU will continue as planned if the WB–Netflix deal moves forward. So far, DC Studios has not indicated any changes to its roadmap. In fact, Gunn’s comments suggest that the studio is prepared for multiple outcomes.
Why James Gunn Is Excited Despite the Uncertainty
While appearing on Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast, James Gunn explained why the possible deal excites him, even though many factors are still unknown.
“Do I have hopes? No. I really don’t, because everything is unknown,” Gunn said.
However, he went on to explain that uncertainty does not necessarily mean something negative. Instead, Gunn believes that every possible direction presents exciting opportunities for DC.
“I think it’s all really exciting, frankly. So I hope and pray for the best.”
Drawing from past experience, Gunn also cautioned against making assumptions during major industry changes. According to him, creative outcomes are often unpredictable, but not always unfavorable.
“Every direction has really exciting things for DC, so I’m excited about where it’s going to go.”
What the Deal Could Mean for the Future of the DCU
The DCU officially launched in December 2024 with Creature Commandos. Since then, the franchise has steadily expanded with major releases in 2025, including Superman and Peacemaker Season 2.
In addition, DC Studios plans to release several highly anticipated projects later this year. These include Supergirl, Lanterns, and Clayface, all of which are key parts of the broader DCU plan.
Looking further ahead, DC Studios has scheduled the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, for release in 2027.
DC Projects Still in Development
Beyond the confirmed slate, DC Studios has announced multiple projects that remain in active development. One of the most talked-about titles is Andy Muschietti’s The Brave and the Bold.
While many of these projects do not yet have release dates, DC Studios continues to emphasize long-term storytelling. This approach suggests that the studio’s creative direction will remain consistent, regardless of corporate changes.
