Jimmy Olsen's Superman Spin-off

James Gunn, director of Superman and co-CEO of DC Studios, recently confirmed that several DCU projects are in development. Most were not part of the original “Gods and Monsters” slate. A new report reveals two character-focused spin-offs in early talks. One of them is Jimmy Olsen’s Superman Spin-off, already sparking strong fan interest.

According to The Wall Street Journal, DC Studios is currently discussing spin-off shows for Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi) and Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo). Although both characters were missing from earlier DCU plans, their inclusion now strongly hints at deeper world-building. Moreover, it expands the narrative beyond the main Superman film and signals a broader vision for the new universe.

Jimmy Olsen’s Superman Spin-Off Takes a Crime Anthology Approach

Most intriguing is the concept behind Jimmy Olsen’s Superman Spin-off, which is reportedly being shaped as a crime anthology series. Instead of following traditional superhero action, this series will feature Jimmy in his familiar role as a Daily Planet reporter, diving deep into investigations involving supervillains.

This format would not only give Olsen a chance to shine as a lead character, but it would also offer a fresh narrative lens to explore the DCU. Specifically, it would do so through investigative journalism rather than traditional capes and powers. Furthermore, the episodic structure could introduce a range of lesser-known or reimagined DC villains, gradually enriching the universe with every case.

According to industry insider Jeff Sneider, one of the villains expected to appear in the Olsen series is none other than Gorilla Grodd. Although Grodd has traditionally been considered a Flash villain, he has also crossed paths with Superman in various comic arcs. As a result, this marks a significant move for the DCU, as it could potentially open the door to other metahuman characters beyond the Superman core.

Although Grodd briefly appeared in the animated Creature Commandos series, this would still mark his official live-action DCU debut. Moreover, his involvement suggests that the show could introduce even larger threats within the new cinematic universe. In addition, it may also lay the groundwork for future character crossovers.

If this project moves forward, Jimmy Olsen’s Superman Spin-off could give fans a more grounded, investigative look at the DC Universe. In particular, it would highlight both street-level threats and cosmic consequences. Most importantly, all of this would unfold through the eyes of one of Superman’s most iconic allies.
