John Cena Got a Last-Minute Call from James Gunn
In a behind-the-scenes video posted to Peacemaker’s official Twitter, John Cena shared how spontaneous the cameo really was.
“I was called in at the final hour, as we were preparing for Peacemaker Season 2… James asked me if I wanted to be involved, and my answer was heck yes.”
He had just wrapped up costume fittings for Season 2 when director and DC Studios head James Gunn reached out with the opportunity.
“So I got to go on a talk show and talk some smack about Superman.”
Why Cena Always Picks Up for James Gunn
Cena also spoke about the strong creative bond he shares with Gunn, praising the filmmaker’s leadership and commitment.
“There is a short list of folks who dial my phone and I’ll immediately pick up for them and say, ‘How can I be of service?’ And he is one.”
Reflecting on Superman’s symbolic importance, Cena added:
“I think everything from the branding to the idea of a true virtuous superhero — you have to start the story of good and evil somewhere, and I think Superman is building block one of that.”
Peacemaker Season 2 and What’s Next for DCU
HBO Max will premiere Peacemaker Season 2 on August 21, 2025. As part of James Gunn’s expanding DC Universe, the new season will further connect the franchise. Meanwhile, Superman, which stars David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult, continues to perform well at the box office.
