David S. Goyer, the writer of the DCEU film Man of Steel, revealed the most absurd script note he ever received from Warner Bros. executives while making the film. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Goyer explained that the note he received was so ridiculous that it took him and his team by surprise.

During an interview, David S. Goyer was asked about the worst script note he ever received in his career. Aside from being asked to put less magic in the Doctor Strange film, Goyer revealed an absurd note he received while making Man of Steel that suggested the Warner Bros. executives might not have been the best fit to oversee the DC universe.

“One note I got was on Man of Steel, where the ending involves Superman utilizing the pod that he arrived in as a child in order to bring down General Zod’s ship,” Goyer said. “The note we got from the studio said, ‘You have to change that.’ We asked why. They said, ‘Because if Superman uses that pod and it’s destroyed while saving the city, how is he ever going to get back home to Krypton?’ There was just this long pause and we said, ‘Krypton blew up. You saw 30 minutes of it!'”

This absurd note highlights a larger issue within Warner Bros. and their understanding of the DC universe. Fans of the comics and films have long criticized the studio for their mishandling of the DC properties, and this note only adds to the list of grievances. It’s important for studios to trust their creative teams and understand the source material they are adapting. While notes and suggestions are a necessary part of the creative process, they should not hinder the story or contradict established facts within the world being portrayed.

This revelation from David S. Goyer highlights the need for competent and knowledgeable leadership in the studios producing superhero films. Fortunately, the current CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn can  be just that.

With Gunn at the helm, it’s unlikely that a ridiculous note like the one Goyer received on Man of Steel would ever make it through. Instead, we can expect a renewed focus on storytelling and character development, ensuring that each film in the DCU feels like a cohesive and meaningful addition to this beloved universe.
