At the 77th Emmy Awards, Cristin Milioti won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her role as Sofia Falcone/Gigante in The Penguin. Matt Reeves, the director behind the series, praised her performance. She brought sympathy to a dangerous character, portraying Sofia as both ruthless and deeply broken beneath the surface.

Matt Reeves Confirms Sofia’s Absence

On the Emmy red carpet, Matt Reeves confirmed that Sofia will not appear in The Batman Part 2. When asked if Sofia would return alongside Colin Farrell’s Penguin, Reeves said:

“Cristin’s not in this one, but that’s because we were so deep into the script [for The Batman Part 2] by the time of [The Penguin].”

He explained that including her would have “upset the apple cart,” while praising Milioti as “incredible.”

Matt Reeves on Sofia Falcone’s Story So Far

In The Penguin, Sofia last appeared in Arkham Asylum, where she received a letter from her half-sister Selina Kyle (Zoë Kravitz). Although this teased a possible setup for her return, Reeves confirmed that the sequel won’t explore it. Nevertheless, due to the show’s acclaim, the creators are discussing a second season of The Penguin, which could potentially bring Sofia back.

What to Expect in The Batman Part 2

In June 2025, Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin confirmed that they had finished the script for the sequel. DC Studios co-president James Gunn, along with cast members like Colin Farrell, have read it. Filming is expected to begin in Spring 2026, with release set for October 1, 2027.

Reeves teased to The Hollywood Reporter:

“The things that [the film] does for his character, for Batman, and for Bruce, I think, have never been done before in this way.”

The Bigger Picture: Bruce Wayne’s Journey

Matt Reeves continues to prioritize Bruce Wayne’s personal journey over simple fan service. His first film, The Batman (2022), emphasized Batman as a detective while presenting villains with thematic purpose:

  • Carmine Falcone (John Turturro): Gotham’s corruption
  • Riddler (Paul Dano): A dark mirror to Batman
  • Penguin (Colin Farrell): A red herring
  • Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz): A personal and moral challenge for Bruce

The film concluded with Bruce realizing he must be a symbol of hope rather than fear, setting up a fresh approach for the sequel.
