Plastic Man Project in Development for DCU Movie

This news follows a February 2024 Threads post by James Gunn, where he addressed multiple rumors, stating,

“AT LEAST one of those things is not true. Have fun guessing!”

Originally, the rumors included:

  • Casting for Ruthye in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
  • Movies for Teen Titans, Sgt. Rock, and Plastic Man (the latter reportedly directed by Darren Aronofsky)

Since then, Ruthye has been cast in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and additionally, DC Studios has officially confirmed that Teen Titans and Sgt. Rock movies are in development. As a result, Plastic Man—or Aronofsky’s involvement—remains the unverified element from Gunn’s 2024 post. Nevertheless, the character may now be moving forward independently, thereby creating fresh anticipation and excitement among fans.

Plastic Man’s Origins and Casting Buzz in DCU Movie

Plastic Man, created by Jack Cole, first appeared in Police Comics #1 in 1941. Originally owned by Quality Comics, he was later acquired by DC Comics in 1956. Known for his extraordinary ability to stretch and transform his body into any shape imaginable, Plastic Man has, until now, never appeared in a live-action project. Therefore, this rumored DCU Movie could mark a significant first for the character, introducing him to a wider audience.

Actors have already expressed interest in portraying the character. Rainn Wilson, famous for The Office, has shown enthusiasm for the role, while Ben Schwartz, the voice behind Sonic the Hedgehog, is reportedly eager to step into Plastic Man’s shoes. This demonstrates the character’s appeal to Hollywood talent.

James Gunn’s Strategy with Lesser-Known Heroes

James Gunn, who previously attempted to make a Plastic Man film 20 years ago, has a proven track record of turning lesser-known characters into household names, as seen with Guardians of the Galaxy and Peacemaker. DC Studios is following a similar strategy, balancing iconic heroes like Wonder Woman and Batman with deep-cut characters such as:

  • Booster Gold
  • Mister Miracle
  • Sgt. Rock
  • Plastic Man

This approach not only expands the DCU’s cinematic universe but also, at the same time, introduces audiences to fresh and exciting storytelling possibilities. Moreover, it allows the studio to explore new characters and narratives that might otherwise remain under the radar.

Upcoming DCU Slate and Release Dates

The rumored Plastic Man project is, in fact, part of a broader slate of upcoming DCU releases. Among these, some of the most notable titles include:

  • Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow – June 26, 2026
  • Clayface – September 11, 2026

The report suggests that Plastic Man is the latest deep-cut DC character to enter active development, reinforcing Gunn’s strategy of bringing lesser-known heroes into the spotlight. As fans eagerly anticipate more details, the potential DCU Movie could redefine how audiences perceive DC’s secondary characters while keeping the cinematic universe diverse and engaging.

If confirmed, this project would be a major milestone for DC Studios. It shows the universe is willing to explore innovative stories beyond traditional superheroes. With a talented director and enthusiastic actors, Plastic Man could finally leap from comic pages to the big screen. Fans can expect a fresh and entertaining experience.
