Smallville Sequel Is Still in the Works—But Not Yet Greenlit

Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum, who portrayed the unforgettable Lex Luthor, have spent the last few years developing an animated Smallville sequel. Their goal is to continue the story where the original left off—possibly even reuniting their version of the Justice League.

However, there’s a catch: they haven’t pitched it to Warner Bros. Discovery yet.

“We haven’t gone to Warner Bros. yet,” Welling shared on the Inside of You podcast with Rosenbaum. “It just doesn’t seem like our show is the type of show where that would happen. I’m smiling and saying it will probably never happen. But I love the idea!”

Although Welling sounds skeptical, his tone reveals a deep affection for the show and its fans.

DCU Priorities May Delay Smallville Sequel Revival

Currently, DC Studios is prioritizing James Gunn’s rebooted Superman, starring David Corenswet. This focus likely explains why other Superman-related projects haven’t moved forward. DC has already scaled back shows like Superman & Lois and the entire Arrowverse to make room for the new DCU continuity.

Even though the Smallville sequel is not officially in motion, its potential hasn’t been ruled out entirely. In fact, original series creators Al Gough and Miles Millar—now acclaimed for their hit Netflix series Wednesday—are also involved.

“The problem with most projects in development in any studio and/or any network is regime change,” Gough explained. “Warners has obviously gone through a lot, and I think the fact that they are in the process of rebooting Superman again, kind of unfortunately, keeps our thing off the table for a bit.”

Fan Power Keeps the Dream of a Return Alive

Despite delays and uncertainty, there’s one undeniable advantage: Smallville’s passionate fanbase. The show continues to resonate with viewers who grew up watching Welling become Clark Kent, long before he ever donned the cape.

With the cast, creators, and fans still excited about the project, the Smallville sequel is far from dead—it’s just waiting for the right moment to return.

So, will we ever see Clark Kent back in action? Maybe not tomorrow, but one thing is certain: the legacy of Smallville is still alive—and it’s not ready to say goodbye just yet.
