James Gunn’s Superman is performing well in theaters. However, fans hoping for Superman 2 might need to lower their expectations. Despite strong box office numbers, a new report suggests that a direct sequel may not arrive anytime soon.
Superman 2 Not Confirmed Despite Strong Box Office
Superman, starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, has grossed around $250 million globally, with approximately $155 million coming from the United States.
Given these strong numbers, many fans naturally assumed that Superman 2 would be fast-tracked. However, James Gunn recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly and offered a more nuanced perspective. He stated:
“What I’m working on is in some way…I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes. But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily.”
This quote confirms that while Superman will return, it may not be in a traditional solo sequel just yet.
Warner Bros. Has Plans—but Superman 2 Isn’t Imminent
According to a new report from Variety, Warner Bros. “has sequel options on Corenswet and Brosnahan.” However, the article also adds:
“A sequel announcement does not appear to be imminent.”
This revelation indicates that while Superman 2 is likely being considered behind the scenes, it isn’t officially in development yet. Warner Bros. declined to comment further, leaving fans without a clear timeline.
Still, there is hope. Gunn’s current mystery project might include Superman in some capacity. Additionally, Corenswet could possibly appear in Supergirl, set for release in 2026. This would give fans another chance to see the Man of Steel, even if it’s outside a direct sequel.
What’s Next for the DCU After Superman?
If Superman 2 isn’t coming anytime soon, characters like Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo), Steve Lombard (Beck Bennett), Perry White (Wendell Pierce), Jonathan Kent (Pruitt Taylor Vince), and Martha Kent (Neva Howell) may not return for a while either.
Meanwhile, the DCU is moving forward. The next confirmed project is Peacemaker Season 2, debuting on HBO Max on August 21, 2025. This will further develop the shared universe crafted by Gunn and Safran.
While Superman 2 may not be imminent, the DCU is clearly building something larger—and Superman’s next flight could come sooner than we expect.
