In a recent interview with People, actor David Corenswet opened up about Superman’s suit experience in James Gunn’s DCU reboot. Surprisingly, it wasn’t all epic poses and superhero swagger.
From wardrobe malfunctions to emotional moments, Superman’s suit experience was more complicated than fans expected. It also felt surprisingly human.
Superman’s Suit Experience: No Quick Zippers
Corenswet shared that one of the biggest hurdles was simply going to the bathroom.
“There are lots of zippers, but there’s no single zipper that allows me to go to the bathroom,” he admitted. “Which you would think would be quite straightforward, but nothing is straightforward about these things.”
The suit, unfortunately, wasn’t designed with quick breaks in mind. Furthermore, modifying it, as it turned out, would have been far too expensive. Consequently, this unexpected detail added a significant layer of discomfort to his otherwise heroic duties.

Bulking Up Added to Superman’s Suit Experience Challenges
After bulking up significantly for the role, the actor found that the suit no longer fit the way it was originally designed to:
“It was quite snug. It had been tailored to my body from the screen test, which was before I put on 40 pounds of muscle, so it was not exactly the same dimensions.”
Despite the discomfort, Corenswet powered through. His physical transformation added authenticity to the role — even if the suit struggled to keep up.
First Time in the Suit Felt Claustrophobic
You’d expect the first time wearing the Superman suit to be a magical moment — but for Corenswet, it wasn’t quite that.
“It was kind of underwhelming… because it didn’t have the ‘S’ on it yet. It was just the general shape, and it felt quite claustrophobic.”
Even the Man of Steel can feel confined at times.
The Unsung Hero Behind the Cape
Behind every superhero is a great support team — and for David Corenswet, that included his personal dresser, Scotty.
Corenswet spoke fondly about the person who helped him navigate the challenges of suiting up every day:
“I had the most amazing dresser you could ask for, Scotty, who was sort of like a… I don’t know, he felt like a mob fixer. He would make excuses for me if I needed, and we got very good together at getting in and out of the suit.”
Their teamwork and trust made the intense costume routine much more manageable — proving that even Superman needs backup.
Why the Suit Looks So Bright and Friendly
Director James Gunn chose a softer, more approachable design for this Superman costume. Corenswet explained:
“Clark wouldn’t want children to be afraid of him.”
That design philosophy — to make Superman feel more hopeful and human — is at the heart of this reboot.
Mark Your Calendar: July 11, 2025
James Gunn’s Superman hits theaters on July 11, 2025. And while fans can expect soaring action and heroic feats, Corenswet’s behind-the-scenes insights remind us that bringing Superman to life takes a lot of behind-the-scenes effort — and a suit that’s tougher than it looks.
