The DC universe has been a hot topic of discussion over the years, with fans always curious about the various iterations of their beloved characters on the big screen. One film that has sparked significant debate is the 2016 release of Suicide Squad, directed by David Ayer. The film received mixed reviews, leaving some fans wondering about the possibility of an alternate version, often referred to as the ‘Ayer Cut.’ Now, there seems to be a glimmer of hope, as James Gunn, the co-CEO of DC Studios, has assured David Ayer that his version of the movie will “have its time” at some point in the future.

Ayer Reignites Hope for the Ayer Cut

Recently, David Ayer posted an image of Jared Leto’s Joker from Suicide Squad on social media without a caption. This sparked a flurry of speculation among fans, prompting Ayer to address the situation directly. He acknowledged the curiosity and interest from fans about his original cut of the film and even addressed the negative criticism it received.

According to Ayer, his unseen version of Suicide Squad plays much better than the studio release, and he believes that the interest in his cut being shown is genuine and organic.

“All I know is my unseen film plays much better than the studio release. The interest in my cut being show seems real and organic. And Gunn told me it would have it’s time to be shared. He absolutely deserves to launch his DC universe without more drama about old projects. In a way I’m chained to this thing. I’m riding a tiger here and navigating this situation the best I can. Life is a very strange journey.”

Will Ayer Cut be Released Ahead of DCU Kickoff?

The Twitter account @CutAyer, dedicated to updates on the “Ayer Cut,” recently reached out to James Gunn, attaching news articles titled “Ayer Cut of ‘Suicide Squad’ to Debut Prior to DCU Launch” and “James Gunn’s ‘Ayer Cut’ Might Come Before Next Year’s DCU Start.” The tweet questions, “There’s a whole string of news articles dropping saying that @JamesGunn is planning to #ReleaseTheAyerCut before the start of the DCU. Any truth here James?”

Instead of Gunn responding, Ayer chimed in, refuting the claim with a succinct statement, “Silly rumor. Not true.”

James Gunn's Support

The news about the Ayer Cut gained further momentum when James Gunn, the co-CEO of DC Studios, gave his approval for its eventual release. Gunn, along with Peter Safran, has been entrusted with leading the studio’s new era, referred to as “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters,” which promises a decade-long plan involving various DC characters across movies and TV.

While initially tempering expectations by focusing on the grand narrative of the DCU, Gunn reassured Ayer that his version of Suicide Squad would eventually see the light of day. According to Ayer, Gunn stated that the Ayer Cut deserves its time to be shared with fans, but he also emphasized the importance of launching the DCU without being bogged down by old projects.

Differences in the Ayer Cut

Over the years, Ayer has spoken about the differences between his original cut of Suicide Squad and the theatrical release. Fans have been intrigued by the alternate main villain, stronger ties to Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and additional scenes featuring Jared Leto’s Joker, among other details. The prospect of experiencing these unseen elements has fueled the #ReleaseTheAyerCut movement, which continues to garner support on social media.

With the support of James Gunn, who holds a prominent position at DC Studios, the hope for experiencing the director’s original vision is stronger than ever. As the DCU embarks on a new era under Gunn and Safran’s leadership, fans eagerly await any official announcements regarding the Ayer Cut and its place in the evolving DC cinematic landscape.
