DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has recently announced the projects in the DC Universe’s Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters slate.

This new slate of movies and TV shows features top names from the Justice League, as well as other heroes and villains that haven’t been given this kind of attention before. The first two stars in the series have now been confirmed.

James Gunn joined the DC Universe with his work in directing and writing The Suicide Squad in 2021. Since then, he has slowly been building his portfolio with Warner Bros. before taking over the entire DC franchise with his partner Peter Safran. Chapter 1 will kick off with two unique HBO Max shows before the studio returns to theaters with Superman: Legacy, written by Gunn himself.

Viola Davis will reprise her role as Amanda Waller in her own HBO Max solo series entitled Waller. Gunn confirmed that the show will feature characters from Peacemaker as regulars, further teasing that it will serve as a direct follow-up to the 2022 series. Gunn stated, “Viola Davis is coming back as her character, Amanda Waller. This is also going to have some of the Peacemaker team in it as regulars on the show. This basically follows up ‘Peacemaker.'”

Sean Gunn, James Gunn’s brother, will reprise his role as Weasel from The Suicide Squad in the animated Creature Commandos show on HBO Max. Gunn confirmed that the new DC Universe will have “animation tied directly into live action,” and that the same actors who voice animated roles will be able to play the same roles in live-action and other formats. Gunn stated, “What we’re doing with the DCU is we’re having animation tied directly into live action. Television, movies, and games all intertwine within the same universe.”

Gunn’s work on The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker received positive reviews from critics and fans, making it no surprise to see both Viola Davis and Sean Gunn return in the fold. Fans are already intrigued to see how Weasel will fare after surviving the attack on the beaches of Corto Maltese in The Suicide Squad. This new slate of movies and TV shows promises to bring fresh, exciting content to the DC Universe, and fans can’t wait to see what the future holds.
