James Gunn Confirms WB Wanted to Recast Henry Cavill Before 2021

By Sebastian Kind Jun 16, 2025

In a surprising update, director James Gunn revealed that Warner Bros. began considering Henry Cavill’s Superman recast even before 2021. He shared this detail during a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly. Furthermore, ComicBookMovie.com later highlighted the report, bringing renewed attention to the studio’s early plans.

Gunn’s statement clearly shows that Cavill didn’t leave the role because of the DCU reboot alone. Instead, his exit was part of a broader, long-standing shift within Warner Bros.

How Henry Cavill’s Superman Recast Story First Began

 From ComicBookMovie.com’s Report

“The studio wanted a new actor to play Superman after Cavill, ‘so it was even more messy than it is now,’ Gunn says. But more importantly, he adds, ‘I didn’t have that special idea of what that [film] would be.”

This quote makes it clear that the decision to explore Henry Cavill’s Superman recast was being seriously discussed by WB as early as 2019.

Past Events That Pointed to a Recast

Even before Gunn’s confirmation, fans had noticed a series of moves that signaled a shift:

  • Cavill declined a cameo in Shazam! (2019)
  • WB slowly distanced the DCEU from Cavill’s Superman
  • Reports of uncertainty about his future began to surface

These actions now seem like part of a larger strategy—one that included Henry Cavill’s Superman recast as a key turning point.

Dwayne Johnson’s Attempt to Reverse Henry Cavill’s Superman Recast

In 2022, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson fought to bring Cavill back as Superman in Black Adam. His successful push led to Cavill’s surprise cameo, reigniting fan hopes for a full return.

However, this comeback was short-lived. After James Gunn and Peter Safran officially took over DC Studios, they confirmed that they would reboot the franchise—leaving no room for Cavill in future projects.

The New Superman: DCU Reboot Moves Forward

As part of this reboot, Gunn cast David Corenswet as the new Superman. His upcoming film, simply titled Superman, will serve as a fresh launch for the DCU and is scheduled to release on July 11, 2025.

This move officially seals Henry Cavill’s Superman recast, turning the page on a decade-long legacy while opening a new chapter for the franchise.

Discussions about Henry Cavill’s Superman recast began well before 2021, highlighting Warner Bros.’ long-term plan to shift the character’s direction. Even before he directed The Suicide Squad, James Gunn received an offer to develop a Superman project—an early sign of transition. Although Cavill briefly returned in Black Adam, his appearance didn’t alter the studio’s commitment to a full reboot. That reboot now moves ahead, with David Corenswet stepping into the role in Gunn’s upcoming 2025 film.
