Director Zack Snyder has revealed what could have been Superman’s next chapter after Man of Steel, surprising longtime DC fans.
He confirmed a sequel centered on Brainiac was in development, charting a different path for Henry Cavill’s Superman.

Snyder Confirms Man of Steel 2 Plans
Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Snyder confirmed they actively planned a sequel.
He said the goal was to expand Superman’s world after establishing his origin story.
“My plan was always to… go do this Brainiac movie that would have like a Superman/Brainiac solo concept.”
This clearly shows that Brainiac—one of Superman’s most intelligent and dangerous enemies—was meant to serve as the central villain in Man of Steel 2.
Why the Sequel Never Happened
Despite those plans, they shelved the sequel in favor of a larger crossover, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Snyder explained that once the idea of introducing Batman came into play, it became impossible to step back.
He pointed to his admiration for The Dark Knight Returns as a major influence behind the shift.
Batman’s introduction wasn’t just a creative choice—it laid the foundation for a larger cinematic universe. As a result, the shift reshaped the DCEU and marked a major turning point.
The Irony: DCU Is Now Following Snyder’s Vision
Interestingly, Snyder’s original idea is now resurfacing in the newly rebooted DC Universe.
Under James Gunn and Peter Safran, DC Studios is building a new timeline, beginning with a Superman reboot.
The film stars David Corenswet and aims to launch a larger story arc, with a major villain alongside Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor.
The direction closely echoes Snyder’s original vision, creating a full-circle moment for DC.
What Fans Missed With Cavill’s Superman
For years, fans have long debated whether Henry Cavill’s Superman truly deserved a solo sequel before moving into crossovers.
Unlike other franchises that built heroes through multiple films, Superman quickly shifted to ensemble stories.
Snyder now confirms they planned a more character-driven sequel, expanding Superman’s mythology with a Brainiac storyline.
A Story That Might Still Be Told
While Snyder’s version of Man of Steel 2 never materialized, the concept itself isn’t gone.
As DC Studios moves in a new direction, the Brainiac storyline could finally reach the big screen—just not with the Superman fans met in 2013.
For many fans, it’s both exciting and bittersweet: the story they once hoped for may still happen, but in a completely different universe.
