Superman isn’t the only Kryptonian soaring through James Gunn’s DCU. In fact, the new Superman film showcases six powerful Kryptonian characters—some well-known, while others are genuinely surprising. Although Krypton no longer exists, the legacy lives on. As a result, the DCU’s Kryptonians continue to leave a powerful and lasting mark across the entire DC Universe.
DCU’s Kryptonians: Superman / Kal-El
Played by: David Corenswet
Superman is the heart and soul of the DCU. Kal-El’s Kryptonian parents sent him to Earth as a baby, and he grew up in Smallville as Clark Kent. Now three years into his heroic journey, he protects the world with hope and integrity while working at the Daily Planet.
Supergirl / Kara Zor-El
Played by: Milly Alcock
Supergirl is Kal-El’s cousin and another survivor of Krypton’s destruction. Though her appearance in Superman is brief, it makes an impact.Kara makes a humorous yet emotional cameo as she arrives drunk to pick up her dog, Krypto. She spent years trapped inside a Kryptonite meteor before finally making it to Earth.
Krypto the Superdog
Krypto debuts in live-action in Superman. This version of Krypto belongs to Supergirl and possesses full Kryptonian powers—flight, heat vision, and super strength. He may be adorable, but he’s also a powerful and loyal protector.
Jor-El
Played by: Bradley Cooper
Jor-El appears via hologram as part of Kal-El’s escape pod from Krypton. A genius scientist and Superman’s father, he sets the foundation for his son’s Earthly mission. However, some of his intentions may not be as pure as they seem.
DCU’s Kryptonians: Lara Lor-Van
Played by: Angela Sarafyan
Lara, Superman’s biological mother, is seen in emotional flashbacks. She plays a critical role in sending Kal-El to Earth, offering one final message of hope before Krypton’s destruction.
Ultraman (Bonus Kryptonian)
Ultraman isn’t born on Krypton but was cloned from Superman’s DNA by Lex Luthor. Though he shares Kal-El’s powers, he lacks his morals. Dangerous and unpredictable, Ultraman is a dark mirror of Superman and a looming threat for the DCU.
The Future of DCU’s Kryptonians
With Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow on the way and Ultraman introducing darker narratives, the story of the DCU’s Kryptonians is only just beginning. As a result, James Gunn’s DC Universe is clearly setting the stage for deeper, more emotionally driven arcs—firmly rooted in Krypton’s tragic past and its powerful, lasting legacy.
