The New Green Lantern Series from DC Comics will take Hal Jordan into a dark alternate universe where humanity becomes a threat to the entire cosmos. Titled Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos, the six-issue Elseworlds series will explore a war-torn DC Universe where the Green Lantern Corps must stop humanity’s intergalactic conquest.
The announcement arrives amid renewed interest in the Green Lantern franchise following HBO’s Lanterns series. However, this new comic book story takes the iconic hero in a very different direction, turning Hal Jordan against the human empire he once served. Written by Dan Watters, known for Batman: Dark Patterns, and illustrated by Kyle Hotz, whose credits include Justice League Dark, the series promises an intense cosmic war filled with betrayal, conflict, and a broken friendship.
New Green Lantern Series Reveals a Dark Alternate DC Universe
Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos reimagines the DC Universe as a brutal, war-torn cosmos where humanity has conquered the stars and threatens other civilizations. In this alternate reality, humans have become the aggressors, forcing the Green Lantern Corps to stand against their expansion. Unlike the traditional DC stories in which Earth’s heroes protect humanity from extraterrestrial threats, this series reverses the conflict. Humanity itself becomes the danger, and the heavily militarized Green Lantern Corps represents the last major force capable of challenging its intergalactic empire.

The official premise promises a brutal cosmic conflict as the Corps fights to restore peace across a radically transformed universe. At the center of the story is Hal Jordan, whose loyalty and identity are tested after he discovers the consequences of humanity’s conquest. This darker approach gives DC an opportunity to explore familiar characters through a completely different lens while examining the consequences of unchecked power.
Hal Jordan Becomes the Green Lantern Corps’ Only Human Warrior
The New Green Lantern Series places Hal Jordan in a particularly difficult position. After being betrayed by his former battle-brother Oliver Queen, better known as Green Arrow, Hal is left for dead on an alien world. The betrayal destroys the bond between the two former allies and leaves Hal facing a future far removed from the life he once knew. However, the Green Lantern Corps eventually rescues him and deprograms him, transforming him into a powerful weapon against the human empire.
Hal then becomes the Corps’ only human warrior, forcing him to fight against the civilization he once served. This reversal creates a compelling conflict for the character. As a Green Lantern, Hal has traditionally defended Earth and protected innocent lives across the universe. Now, he must confront humanity’s actions and help stop its campaign of conquest.
The story also raises questions about loyalty, identity, and whether Hal can separate his duty as a Green Lantern from his connection to humanity.
Green Arrow’s Betrayal Could Change Hal Jordan Forever
One of the most intriguing elements of Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos is the fractured relationship between Hal Jordan and Oliver Queen. The two heroes have shared a long history in DC Comics, often serving as contrasting but complementary figures. Their friendship has frequently brought together Hal’s disciplined approach and Oliver’s rebellious personality.
In this alternate reality, however, Oliver’s betrayal leaves Hal abandoned on an alien world. The fallout from that decision becomes a major part of the series, with their once-strong bond shattered by the conflict. Their broken friendship could add a personal dimension to the larger cosmic war. Hal will not only be fighting against humanity’s empire but also dealing with the betrayal of someone he once considered a trusted ally.
Whether the two characters eventually confront each other again remains to be seen. Nevertheless, their damaged relationship appears central to the series’ emotional stakes.

The publisher has also revealed preview artwork by Hotz, alongside variant covers created by Björn Barends, Steve Beach, and Ashley Wood. Barends will additionally provide a foil variant cover.

The different covers offer readers a glimpse of the series’ darker visual direction. With its alternate-universe setting and militarized Green Lantern Corps, the comic is positioned to deliver a distinct take on the franchise. The first issue will include 32 pages and carry a US cover price of $4.99. Card-stock variant editions will cost $5.99, while the foil variant will be priced at $7.99.
When Does the New Green Lantern Series Release?
Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos #1 will arrive in comic book stores on January 20, 2027. The six-issue Elseworlds series will follow Hal Jordan as he fights against humanity’s expansion and confronts the consequences of Oliver Queen’s betrayal.
With humanity positioned as the enemy and Hal forced to battle the empire he once served, the series promises a dramatically different take on the Green Lantern mythology.
The upcoming comic also arrives at a time of renewed attention for the franchise. While Lanterns explores Green Lantern stories in live action, Doomed Cosmos will offer readers a darker alternate reality where the fate of the universe rests on Hal Jordan’s willingness to stand against his own people.
