Tomlin’s Cryptic Tease Sparks Superhero Project Speculation

Superhero Project

Mattson Tomlin, co-writer of the highly anticipated The Batman Part 2, may have just teased a new superhero project. Surprisingly, it may have no connection to Gotham City.

Although Tomlin contributed to the 2022 The Batman screenplay, he didn’t receive official credit due to a WGA arbitration. However, many recognize his creative influence. Now, fans are wondering if he’s about to take on something even bigger in the DC Universe.

When a fan asked Tomlin online which comic book character he’d love to write next, his short, mysterious response was:

“You’ll see.”

That cryptic line was enough to light a firestorm of theories online. Could Tomlin be involved in a brand-new superhero project under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s leadership? Or is he teasing the introduction of a new character within The Batman Part 2, such as Robin or Batgirl?

Is Mattson Tomlin Teasing a New Superhero Project in the DCU?

Given the ongoing expansion and restructuring of the DCU, many believe Tomlin’s tease points to a separate superhero project outside the Batman universe. His storytelling style—grounded yet rich in emotion—aligns perfectly with the kind of tone Gunn and Safran are building across upcoming films and series.

Some fans suspect that this could involve a lesser-known DC character getting their cinematic debut. Others believe Tomlin may already be working on one of the DCU’s future titles, potentially in an advisory or screenwriting role.

However, another possibility is that this superhero project is directly connected to The Batman Part 2. Rumors have circulated for months about the Bat-Family expanding in the sequel. Theories include the possible debut of Dick Grayson as Robin or even the introduction of Barbara Gordon’s Batgirl.

Tomlin’s Expanding Career Adds to the Speculation

Outside of his work on Batman, Tomlin has established himself as a versatile writer and filmmaker. He penned Netflix’s sci-fi action film Project Power, co-wrote the poignant indie drama Little Fish, and directed the post-apocalyptic thriller Mother/Android.

Most recently, he created the animated series Terminator Zero, which premiered on Netflix in 2024. This breadth of experience positions him as a strong candidate to lead or contribute to a new DC superhero property.

Despite his lack of credit on The Batman, Tomlin has consistently described his working relationship with director Matt Reeves as extremely positive. While reflecting on the experience, he openly admitted that not receiving credit was “painful.” However, he quickly emphasized, “Matt had me on from day one,” highlighting the mutual trust and collaboration between them.

This strong partnership has continued into The Batman Part 2. The film is set to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.

Mattson Tomlin’s vague but intriguing response—“You’ll see.”—has, as a result, opened the door to major fan speculation. Whether it’s a brand-new superhero project under the DCU umbrella or, alternatively, the long-awaited introduction of Bat-Family characters, one thing is certain: without a doubt, Tomlin is a name to watch.

Moreover, with his growing résumé and strong creative ties to both Matt Reeves and DC, it’s clear that his next move could significantly shape the future of the franchise.
