“Even though they’re cousins, you get this almost older-sibling dynamic, and that can be adversarial at times,” Craig Gillespie told Entertainment Weekly. “He’s the gentle guy that wants to reach out and be patient, and she’s having to find a way and find herself.”
This dynamic suggests that Supergirl will bring a different emotional tone compared to Superman. Furthermore, it highlights how Kara Zor-El is still discovering her identity.
Supergirl’s Trauma Shapes Her Personality

Craig Gillespie explained the emotional contrast between the characters:
“They have such different upbringings,” he said, adding, “Superman hasn’t gone through trauma. He came from a very loving family and was almost groomed to be in this role, whereas Supergirl has been through trauma, and the role’s kind of being pushed upon her at a later age, and she’s having to adjust to that.”
Because of this, Supergirl may struggle more with her role as a hero. Additionally, this contrast could make her journey more emotional and complex.
Childhood on Krypton Shaped Her Journey
Unlike Superman, Kara Zor-El actually lived on Krypton before arriving on Earth. Her parents, Zor-El and Alura, sent her away just before the planet’s destruction, leaving her to carry memories of her lost home. This backstory sets her apart from Superman and helps explain why she approaches heroism differently.
Supergirl Arrives Speaking Kryptonian
Craig Gillespie also teased an interesting detail about Supergirl’s first moments on Earth. According to the director, she initially cannot speak English.
“It was actually our first day out the gate. She just landed, so she doesn’t know English. So she’s out of the gate speaking Kryptonian,” he exclaimed.
This detail suggests that Kara will need to adjust to life on Earth. Therefore, viewers can anticipate a more grounded and character-driven story.
