DC Studios Announces Bold New Joker TV Series With a Surprising Premise!

DC Studios has officially unveiled a brand-new joker project, and it could be one of the studio’s most unexpected announcements yet. During this year’s Annecy International Film Festival in France, DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation revealed Joker: Laugh Riot, the company’s first anime series. Moreover, the project offers a bold new take on Gotham City. It places the Clown Prince of Crime at the center of an intense murder mystery.

Joker Takes Center Stage in a Gotham Without Batman

Instead of facing Batman in another classic showdown, the joker begins searching for answers after someone murders Gotham’s greatest hero. According to the official premise, Batman is already dead when the story begins. As a result, the city’s balance of power changes completely.

As a result, joker launches a ruthless campaign through Gotham’s criminal underworld to uncover the identity of the mysterious killer. However, his relentless pursuit slowly forces him to question his own purpose.

The official logline reads:

“When Batman is murdered, the Joker launches a ruthless crusade through Gotham’s underworld to find the killer who took away his greatest adversary. But as his violent quest for answers pushes him closer towards vigilante than villain, Joker is forced to confront the truth that without Batman, he doesn’t know who he is.”

Rather than telling another traditional hero-versus-villain story, the anime explores Joker’s identity in a new way. He must face life after losing the one person who gave it meaning.. Consequently, the series promises a darker and more psychological approach to the iconic character.

DC Studios Officially Enters the Anime World

The announcement also marks a historic moment for DC Studios. Not only is Joker: Laugh Riot a completely new animated project, but it is also the studio’s first official anime series.

Furthermore, the show has already received a straight-to-series order, highlighting the confidence behind the project even before its premiere.

Production is being handled by DC Studios, Warner Bros. Animation, and Sola Entertainment. Together, the three studios aim to deliver a fresh interpretation of Gotham while embracing the visual style and storytelling techniques of anime.

Acclaimed Creative Team Leads the New Anime Series

Yasuhiro Aoki will direct Joker: Laugh Riot. He previously directed ChaO (2025), which earned the Jury Prize at this year’s Annecy International Film Festival. In addition, Aoki has worked on several acclaimed productions, including Psycho-Pass, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, Halo Legends, multiple Naruto films, and a segment of Batman: Gotham Knight (2009).

Meanwhile, veteran producer Jim Krieg joins the project as producer. Over the years, Krieg has contributed to numerous DC animated productions, including the upcoming Batman: Knightfall and the Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths animated trilogy.

Because of the experienced creative team, expectations for the anime are already growing among both DC and anime fans.

Joker Release Date Has Yet to Be Announced

Although DC Studios has officially announced Joker: Laugh Riot, the company has not revealed an official release date.

Nevertheless, the series has already generated significant excitement thanks to its unique premise and talented creative team. As more information becomes available, fans will be eager to see how this bold new interpretation of the iconic DC villain unfolds.

Joker: Laugh Riot could become one of DC Studios’ most distinctive animated projects in years. By placing Joker in a Gotham without Batman, the anime explores a fascinating new direction for one of DC’s most legendary villains. While fans must wait for further updates, the announcement has already made the series one of the studio’s most anticipated upcoming releases.
