For decades, Green Lantern fans have wondered why Earth appears to have more Green Lanterns than almost any other planet in the DC Universe. While the comics have offered partial explanations, the upcoming Lanterns series is finally set to provide a clear answer.
Even better, the mystery connects directly to the show’s biggest heroes. As a result, viewers will learn more about Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Guy Gardner before the story expands into the wider DC Universe.
Lanterns Will Explain Why Earth Has Three Green Lanterns
According to series creators Damon Lindelof and Tom King, Lanterns will address why Space Sector 2814 has three Green Lanterns instead of the standard two.
In DC Comics, the Guardians of the Universe divide the cosmos into 3,600 space sectors. Normally, each sector is protected by two Green Lanterns. However, Earth has long been an unusual exception.
The comics explain that Earth produces an unusually high number of fearless individuals, allowing several humans to become Green Lanterns at the same time. Nevertheless, the DCU series plans to provide its own explanation for why Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Guy Gardner all possess power rings simultaneously.
Tom King Teases Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern Story
Tom King revealed that Guy Gardner’s journey will become an important part of the series.
“One thing to lean on is the fact that Nathan is a fantastic actor who can adjust to situations but the thing to really lean on, is the source material. Guy Gardner in the comics, he is a little more elevated, a little more goofy…and it gives a balance to where those three people are how they interact with superheroism. To me, it’s a wonderful glance at how three different heroes handle the same powerset and deal with the world.”
King also hinted that the show will answer one of the franchise’s oldest questions.
“The wonderful thing about Superman is that there’s the mystery of why Guy has the ring, which we get to solve.”
This suggests the DCU adaptation will explore Guy Gardner’s origin in greater detail than previous live-action projects.
Damon Lindelof Says Lanterns Connects the Entire DCU
Damon Lindelof explained that Lanterns was designed to fit naturally into the larger DC Universe rather than exist as a standalone story.
He said:
“We wanted all of the projects to be talking to one another and not siloed off on their own storylines, so it was important for us to explain what role Hal and John have in the overarching narrative of how many rings are there, who has the rings, who’s looking over this particular sector, etc. I’ll just say there’s more to Nathan than just a video game cutscene. We got our Nathan’s worth.”
His comments indicate that the series will establish important Green Lantern mythology while strengthening connections between future DCU projects.
How the Green Lantern Mystery Works in DC Comics?
The comics already offer an interesting explanation for Guy Gardner’s connection to the Green Lantern Corps.
When Abin Sur’s power ring searched for a successor, it judged both Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner equally worthy. Since Hal was physically closer, the ring selected him first.
Later, Guy Gardner became Hal’s official backup Green Lantern. After Guy suffered serious injuries, John Stewart was chosen as another replacement for Sector 2814.
Although comic readers know this history, Lanterns appears ready to adapt the idea while expanding it for the DCU timeline.
