Nathan Fillion’s DCU’s Guy Gardner is becoming an increasingly important character in the new DC Universe. After making his debut as the arrogant Green Lantern, Fillion has already lined up appearances across several upcoming DCU projects.
However, Guy Gardner’s role may now be expanding in a surprising direction. Beyond Lanterns and Superman: Man of Tomorrow, Fillion is reportedly joining another major DC project.
DCU’s Guy Gardner Joins Mister Miracle
Nathan Fillion has reportedly joined the upcoming animated Mister Miracle series as Guy Gardner. Lanterns showrunner Tom King revealed the news during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
King explained that bringing Fillion into the project has been a particularly enjoyable experience. He said:
“We brought Nathan into Mister Miracle’s show, and doing that, it’s just so wonderful,”
King also explained why Fillion’s version of Guy Gardner works so well in a project with a different tone from Lanterns.
“He brings that energy to every aspect of it. And you would think it would be different tonally from [Lanterns], but it blends because that’s who Guy is. He’s that guy who is over the top. We all know that guy who’s a little bit like that.”
As a result, Guy Gardner could bring the same chaotic energy to Mister Miracle that audiences have already seen from Fillion’s portrayal of the character.
Nathan Fillion’s DCU’s Guy Gardner Keeps Expanding
Fillion first appeared as DCU’s Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s Superman. The character quickly stood out because of his arrogant attitude and larger-than-life personality.
He then reprised the role in Peacemaker Season 2. Meanwhile, Fillion is set to return as Guy Gardner in Lanterns, giving the character another major role within the DCU.
After that, he will appear again in the upcoming Superman: Man of Tomorrow.
Now, his reported involvement in Mister Miracle adds another project to Guy Gardner’s growing DCU presence. Therefore, the character could become one of the universe’s most frequently recurring supporting heroes.
What Is Mister Miracle About?
The animated Mister Miracle series was announced at this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
Tom King is developing the project, bringing his experience with the character from his acclaimed Mister Miracle comics. The story will follow Scott Free, better known as Mister Miracle, and his wife, Big Barda.
However, the series will not simply focus on their superhero adventures.
Instead, Scott Free and Big Barda will attempt to build a quiet life together on Earth. At the same time, their past and the larger conflict between Apokolips and New Genesis will continue to affect them.
The series will also explore Darkseid and the ongoing war between the two worlds.
Mister Miracle Will Be Part of the DCU
Mister Miracle is being produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation. More importantly, James Gunn has confirmed that the animated series will be part of the DCU canon.
That makes Fillion’s involvement especially interesting.
Guy Gardner is already connected to the Green Lantern side of the DCU through Lanterns. His appearance in Mister Miracle could now connect him to the cosmic and Fourth World elements surrounding Scott Free, Big Barda, Darkseid, Apokolips, and New Genesis.
Furthermore, the casting highlights how the new DCU can use characters across different types of projects. Guy Gardner may appear in live-action productions while also crossing into animated stories.
More Mister Miracle Casting Details Are Still Unknown
Although Nathan Fillion’s involvement has been revealed, the rest of the Mister Miracle cast remains largely under wraps.
Casting details for Scott Free, Big Barda, and other major characters have not yet been announced.
Tom King has, however, teased one particularly interesting detail. The actor chosen to voice Darkseid will reportedly be an unexpected choice.
As a result, the upcoming casting announcements could bring even more surprises.
At the moment, Mister Miracle does not have an announced release date.
Nevertheless, the project is already attracting attention because of its creative team and its place within the DCU. Tom King is developing the series, DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation are producing it, and James Gunn has confirmed its connection to the DCU canon.
Now, Nathan Fillion’s involvement gives the project another major connection to the wider universe.
