Black Adam’s profitability has become controversial again after Noah Centineo revealed what a Warner Bros. executive allegedly told him about the movie’s financial performance.
Centineo played Atom Smasher in the 2022 DC movie alongside Dwayne Johnson. During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor discussed the film’s finances and shared a surprising comment he received from a studio executive.
Black Adam Was Reportedly Only Barely Profitable
Centineo acknowledged that making a profit is still a positive result. According to Centineo, the executive said the movie “barely crawled over the line of profitable.” That claim adds another perspective to the long-running debate over whether Black Adam actually made money.
However, he pointed out that a major franchise movie with a production cost of $250 million or more needs to generate enormous revenue to become a meaningful financial success. The actor’s comments offer a different perspective from previous statements about the movie’s financial performance.
For years, conflicting reports have made Black Adam profitability difficult to determine.
Dwayne Johnson Previously Claimed the Movie Made Money
Dwayne Johnson previously offered a much more positive assessment of the Black Adam’s profitability. Johnson claimed that Black Adam was expected to generate between $52 million and $72 million in profit. He based the figures on a Deadline report that accounted for additional revenue sources and lower-than-expected marketing costs. Johnson’s comments therefore presented the movie as a profitable release rather than a major financial disappointment.
However, other industry reports reached very different conclusions.
Industry Reports Painted a Different Picture
Variety previously estimated that Black Adam could lose between $50 million and $100 million. Those reports also suggested that the movie needed significantly more revenue to reach its break-even point. That creates a substantial difference between the various financial estimates surrounding the film.
The conflicting numbers have made it difficult to determine exactly how much money Black Adam ultimately generated for Warner Bros.
A Puck Report Added More Controversy
The debate surrounding Black Adam’s profitability became even more complicated after a report from Puck. The report claimed that Warner Bros. executives suspected inaccurate financial figures had circulated regarding the movie’s profitability. That allegation added another layer to the disagreement over the film’s actual financial outcome.
However, the competing reports demonstrate how difficult it can be to determine a Hollywood movie’s final profit or loss based solely on its worldwide box-office total.
How Much Did Black Adam Make?
Black Adam ultimately earned approximately $393 million worldwide. On paper, that sounds like a substantial box-office result. However, the movie reportedly carried a production budget between $190 million and $260 million. Marketing and distribution costs would have added significantly more to the overall expense. Consequently, a worldwide gross of $393 million does not automatically mean that the studio earned a large profit.
Why the Budget Matters?
The Black Adam’s profitability debate largely comes down to the movie’s enormous budget. Blockbusters need to generate substantially more than their production budgets because theaters keep a portion of ticket sales.
Studios also spend significant amounts on global marketing, distribution, and other expenses. Therefore, a movie can earn hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office while still producing a relatively small profit or even a loss.
That appears to be the central issue behind the conflicting reports about Black Adam.
Noah Centineo Still Enjoyed Making Black Adam
Despite the financial controversy, Centineo spoke positively about his experience working on the movie. The actor praised Dwayne Johnson and Mohammed Amer for creating a close-knit atmosphere on set. Centineo also highlighted Pierce Brosnan’s warmth and described the cast as collaborative.
Those experiences appear to have left a positive impression on the actor despite the movie’s complicated financial story.
Black Adam Taught Centineo Valuable Lessons
Centineo also explained that working on Black Adam gave him valuable experience with large-scale Hollywood filmmaking. The production introduced him to the challenges of making an expensive superhero blockbuster. That experience could prove useful as his career continues to expand across major studio productions.
Although the movie’s financial results remain disputed, Centineo clearly views his time on the project as worthwhile.
Black Adam’s Box Office Story Continues to Spark Debate
The Black Adam’s profitability controversy demonstrates why box-office gross alone cannot determine whether a major Hollywood movie succeeded financially. The film earned approximately $393 million worldwide, but its enormous production and marketing costs significantly changed the financial equation.
Meanwhile, conflicting reports from Johnson, Variety, Puck, and others have produced very different interpretations of the movie’s bottom line. Centineo’s latest comments add another intriguing perspective, but the debate over true Black Adam’s profitability is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
