The Gorilla Grodd TV show is taking the DCU in a direction fans may not expect. HBO Max has ordered an eight-episode series connected to the world established in James Gunn’s Superman. However, this project won’t follow the conventional formula of a superhero spin-off.
Instead, the creative team has developed an unusual concept that puts the Daily Planet and Metropolis under the spotlight.
A Different Kind of DCU Series
The Gorilla Grodd TV Show, officially titled The People v. Gorilla Grodd, is expanding the world established in James Gunn’s Superman. HBO Max has ordered eight episodes of the unusual DCU project, which will bring back familiar Daily Planet characters while taking a very different approach to storytelling.
Rather than creating another traditional superhero adventure, they have designed the series around an in-universe documentary concept.
The Daily Planet Creates a Documentary
The biggest surprise involves how audiences will experience the story. The Gorilla Grodd TV Show will reportedly exist as a documentary produced by the Daily Planet for the people of Metropolis. That means the series will essentially present itself as a piece of media created inside the DCU. Yacenda and Perrault described the idea as:
“We’re excited by the challenge of creating a series that feels less like an entry into the DCU and more like an artifact from it. A Daily Planet original documentary made for the people of Metropolis.”
This approach gives the project a completely different identity from the usual DC television format.
Jimmy Olsen Takes the Lead
Skyler Gisondo will reprise his role as Jimmy Olsen. The Daily Planet photographer will reportedly become the central figure behind the documentary. Jimmy will investigate the Metropolis criminal justice system while documenting what happens throughout the city. Consequently, the character will have a much larger role than he had in Superman.
Comedy Meets True Crime
The Gorilla Grodd TV Show will combine several different genres. The creative team wants to mix:
- DC Comics
- Comedy
- True crime
- Documentary storytelling
That combination could give the series a distinctive tone. Yacenda and Perrault said:
“We hope it’ll appeal to fans of the comics, comedy and true crime. And while we can’t speak for audiences here yet, we already know it’s a huge hit in Metropolis. They love this series.”
The comment also reinforces the show’s unusual premise: the documentary itself exists within the fictional world.
James Gunn and Peter Safran Return to Metropolis
James Gunn and Peter Safran also explained why they wanted to revisit the world of Superman. They said:
“Between Skyler’s wonderful performance and the fantastic chemistry of the Daily Planet cast, we knew coming out of Superman that this would be a fun world to explore.”
The series will therefore expand on the characters and setting that audiences first encountered in Gunn’s movie. However, it will approach them from a very different perspective.
Metropolis’ Criminal Justice System
The Gorilla Grodd TV Show will take Jimmy beyond the Daily Planet newsroom. Gunn and Safran said the documentary will:
“take the audience down some of the darker and funnier streets and alleyways of the DCU as Jimmy spotlights the Metropolis criminal justice system for his docuseries.”
That description suggests that the series will explore parts of Metropolis that a traditional Superman story might not have time to examine. It could also provide a comedic look at how ordinary institutions deal with the extraordinary events surrounding superheroes.

Familiar Daily Planet Faces Return
The series will feature several actors from Superman. The announced cast includes:
- Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen
- Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard
- Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant
- Wendell Pierce as Perry White
Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Arian Moayed, Andrew Leeds, and Tim Baltz will also appear. Their return should help preserve the workplace dynamic established in the movie.
Why This Series Could Be Important?
The Gorilla Grodd TV Show represents an interesting experiment for DC Studios. Instead of focusing entirely on superheroes, the project can explore how Metropolis functions around them. The documentary format could allow the writers to examine the city’s criminal justice system, media landscape, and everyday residents.
At the same time, the comedy and true-crime elements could give the series a tone that feels unlike anything else currently announced for the DCU.
Is This a Traditional DCU Spin-Off?
Not exactly. Although the series exists within the world established by Superman, the creators specifically want it to feel like an artifact from that universe rather than another conventional entry into the franchise. That distinction could become one of its biggest strengths. The Gorilla Grodd TV Show can tell a smaller, more unusual story while still expanding the DCU.
When Will the Gorilla Grodd TV Show Premiere?
The Gorilla Grodd TV Show is still taking shape, with HBO Max yet to announce when audiences can expect the series to premiere. HBO Max has ordered eight episodes, but the studio has not announced an official release window. More information should emerge as production progresses. For now, the documentary concept remains the project’s biggest talking point.
By putting Jimmy Olsen behind a documentary camera and exploring Metropolis through comedy and true-crime storytelling, the series can expand Gunn’s DCU without simply repeating the formula of a superhero show. The result could offer fans a completely different look at the world surrounding Superman.
