The Lanterns plot Hole has sparked plenty of questions among DCU fans, particularly after the first episode introduced a surprising detail involving Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner.
James Gunn has now responded to one fan theory surrounding the mystery, but instead of explaining the situation, the DC Studios co-head has encouraged viewers to keep watching. His short response could mean that the apparent inconsistency is actually connected to a larger story.
Why Are Multiple Green Lanterns on Earth?
The question revolves around the number of Green Lanterns currently operating on Earth. The first episode of Lanterns ends with John Stewart discovering Hal Jordan’s body in 2026. Hal’s Green Lantern ring is nowhere to be found, creating another mystery for the series. Tom King, one of the show’s creators, later revealed that Guy Gardner possesses Hal’s missing ring. That revelation immediately raised an important question.
Guy already appears as a Green Lantern in James Gunn’s Superman. So why does Earth seemingly have multiple Green Lantern ring-bearers?
The Lanterns Plot Hole Has a Popular Fan Theory
One fan believes Clark Kent and Kara Zor-El could provide the explanation. The theory suggests that the presence of Superman and Supergirl on Earth may have convinced the Guardians to assign additional Green Lanterns to the planet. The idea would potentially explain why both Hal and Guy operate on Earth.
A fan on Threads, @the_solitary_chirper, directly asked Gunn:
“Am I correct in assuming that the presence of Clark and Kara on Earth is why the Guardians suddenly decided the backwaters of a sector Earth is in needed more than one Green Lantern? Is that why we have both Hal AND Guy?”
Gunn’s response was extremely brief:
“You’ll find out.”
That answer doesn’t confirm the theory, but it strongly suggests that the question may eventually receive an explanation.

James Gunn Isn’t Ready to Explain It Yet
Gunn’s response makes the Lanterns plot hole even more intriguing. Rather than dismissing the theory, he indicated that viewers will eventually learn the truth. That could mean the apparent continuity issue forms part of the show’s larger mythology. Alternatively, the explanation could arrive through the developing relationship between Hal and John. Either way, Gunn appears to be asking fans to wait before judging the situation.
What Happened to Hal Jordan?
The mystery begins with Hal’s death in the present-day timeline. John discovers his former mentor’s frozen body on football bleachers in Rushville, Nebraska. More importantly, Hal’s Green Lantern ring is missing. The disappearance creates an obvious question about who took it and why. Tom King’s revelation that Guy Gardner has the ring adds another layer to the mystery. However, the series has not yet explained how the ring moved from Hal to Guy.
Guy Gardner’s Connection Could Become Important
Nathan Fillion plays Guy Gardner in the DCU. The character already appeared in Superman, establishing him as one of Earth’s active Green Lanterns. That makes the Lanterns plot hole particularly interesting because the series appears to take place across different periods while connecting directly to the wider DCU.
The story could eventually explain how Guy acquired Hal’s ring or why multiple Lanterns were operating on Earth.
What Could Happen in Episode 2?
The second episode of Lanterns arrives on HBO Max on August 23, 2026. The episode is expected to continue the 2016 storyline involving Hal and John. The pair may investigate the strange alien encounter introduced in the premiere while attempting to understand what brought the creature to Rushville. The episode could also provide more information about Hal and John’s complicated partnership. However, there is no confirmation that the Guy Gardner mystery will receive an immediate answer.
Hal and John’s Investigation Continues
Kyle Chandler stars as Hal Jordan, while Aaron Pierre plays John Stewart. Their relationship forms one of the central elements of Lanterns. The show uses multiple timelines to explore their partnership while gradually building the mystery surrounding Hal’s eventual death. As a result, seemingly disconnected details could become important later in the season.
The DCU Mystery Is Only Beginning
The Lanterns plot hole may not actually be a plot hole at all. James Gunn’s “You’ll find out” response suggests that the apparent inconsistency could have a deliberate explanation within the story. With Hal’s missing ring, Guy Gardner’s involvement, and multiple Green Lanterns operating on Earth, the series has several mysteries still waiting for answers.
For now, fans will have to keep watching to discover whether the Guardians, Superman, Supergirl, or something else entirely explains why Earth has more than one Green Lantern.
