Grant Morrison on Jason Momoa’s Lobo Performance has sparked discussion after the DC Comics writer shared their thoughts on Supergirl. Morrison criticized several aspects of the DCU movie while praising Milly Alcock’s performance.
In a September 20 Substack post, Morrison discussed what they felt worked and did not work in the film. Their strongest criticism targeted Momoa’s portrayal of Lobo.

“Jason Momoa, who I was actually looking forward to, was very disappointing as Lobo. It was, in fact, one of the worst performances I’ve ever seen in a film and quite baffling, as I know Momoa’s not usually that bad, and Lobo seems like a character made for him to play. Go figure.”
The comments represent Morrison’s personal assessment of the performance. They also expressed surprise because they believed Momoa was well suited to the character. “They needn’t have bothered chasing after the dull and low level Romanian gangster baddie, Krem of the Yellow Hills, to get the antidote after all!”
The criticism shows that Morrison’s concerns extended beyond individual performances and included the movie’s narrative choices.
Supergirl Arrived in the DCU’s First Chapter
Supergirl arrived in U.S. theaters on June 26 as part of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. The movie grossed $126.4 million against a reported production budget of between $170 million and $186 million.
The film introduced Alcock’s version of Kara Zor-El while also bringing Momoa into the DCU as Lobo. Momoa’s casting was notable because he previously portrayed Arthur Curry/Aquaman in the earlier DC film universe.
Jason Momoa’s Lobo Has a Different DCU Role
Momoa’s transition from Aquaman to Lobo gives him a substantially different character within the DCU. Lobo is a violent intergalactic bounty hunter with a long history in DC Comics. The character’s personality and appearance have made him one of the more recognizable antiheroes in the publisher’s cosmic lineup.
