James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow vision is becoming clearer as the DC Studios co-CEO explains how standalone movies and interconnected stories will shape the DC Universe. Gunn wants audiences to enjoy individual projects on their own merits while watching a larger narrative gradually take shape.
In recent comments on Threads, Gunn pushed back against criticism of the DCU’s connected storytelling approach. He explained that his eight-to-ten-year roadmap was never just about linking movies and shows. Instead, it also covered the wider DC brand, creative freedom, different storytelling styles, and the development of both major and lesser-known characters.
James Gunn Explains the DCU’s Standalone and Connected Stories
Gunn addressed questions about what the expanding DCU is building toward. He explained that some projects will tell independent stories, while others will contribute to a broader narrative.
In his first Threads post, Gunn referred to comments he made in January 2023 when DC Studios began establishing its plans. He defended the approach of combining standalone projects with stories that contribute to a larger saga.
Gunn wrote:
“No. You can look at my quotes from January ’23 when we started and I said we were going to do exactly what we’re doing. I said some stories would be standalone like the Guardians movies were (which is what Clayface is) and some stories would have part of a larger narrative structure, which is what the Superman Saga is. All that said, each piece of the larger story should work on its own with or without having to see everything else.”
His comments clarify the distinction between Clayface and the Superman Saga. While Clayface will tell a standalone story, James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow will contribute to the larger narrative surrounding Superman and the DCU. However, Gunn stressed that interconnected storytelling should never make individual releases feel like homework. Each installment must deliver a satisfying experience without requiring viewers to watch every other movie or show first.

How James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow Continues the Superman Saga?
James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow will move the Superman Saga forward following the events of Superman. Rather than functioning solely as a conventional sequel, the film will form another chapter in the larger storyline Gunn is developing.
Gunn’s approach allows characters from other DCU projects to become part of the bigger narrative without making their original appearances feel like extended introductions. Some movies can remain independent, while others can explore meaningful connections between characters and storylines. The filmmaker has also expressed excitement about seeing these connections develop. He wrote on Threads:
“It’s exciting seeing things START to come together and all that makes me even more excited for what we have in store for everyone in Man of Tomorrow,”
His comments suggest that audiences will gradually see more of the DCU’s larger story take shape. Nevertheless, Gunn wants every project to maintain its own identity and work for viewers who may not have followed the entire franchise.
James Gunn Clarifies the DCU’s 8–10 Year Roadmap
Gunn also addressed confusion surrounding DC Studios’ frequently discussed eight-to-ten-year roadmap. He explained that the original plan involved much more than outlining future story points or preparing for a massive crossover.
Gunn clarified what the roadmap was intended to accomplish.
He wrote:
“ALSO, some things get conflated here. The often cited “8 to 10 year roadmap” originally pitched wasn’t only story points (although that was a part of it), but also the plan for DC as a whole, including focusing on diamond characters (Superman, Batman, etc) as well as smaller characters we could turn into diamonds (Krypto, John Stewart, Peacemaker), how we would foster filmmaker freedom & allow for multiple tones & ratings, the influences of Star Wars & George RR Martin, and so much more.”
This clarification reveals the broader ambitions behind James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow plans. The roadmap considers not only how individual stories connect but also how DC Studios can develop its characters, support filmmakers, and establish a distinctive identity for the franchise.
Gunn’s reference to “diamond characters” highlights the importance of building around established heroes such as Superman and Batman. At the same time, he wants lesser-known characters like Krypto, John Stewart, and Peacemaker to become important parts of the DC brand. His emphasis on filmmaker freedom also suggests that DC Studios does not intend to force every project into the same tone or rating. Instead, different stories can appeal to different audiences while still existing within the broader universe.
Superman and Lex Luthor Face Brainiac in Man of Tomorrow
The upcoming film will bring David Corenswet back as Superman and Nicholas Hoult back as Lex Luthor. This time, the rivals will face a common threat in Brainiac, an alien cyborg portrayed by Lars Eidinger.
The unusual alliance between Superman and Lex Luthor could push the Superman Saga into a new phase while introducing a major threat to the wider DCU.
Man of Tomorrow is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 9, 2027. Although details about its wider connections remain limited, Gunn’s comments indicate that the film will advance the larger narrative while delivering a story that audiences can enjoy independently.
What James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow Plans Mean for the DCU?
Ultimately, James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow vision aims to balance standalone storytelling with a connected superhero universe. His latest comments also clarify that the eight-to-ten-year roadmap covers the entire DC brand, including character development, creative freedom, and the variety of stories the studio wants to tell.
For audiences, this approach could deliver greater variety across DCU releases. Clayface can tell its own story, while Man of Tomorrow advances the Superman Saga and helps connect the wider franchise. The challenge will be maintaining that balance as more projects arrive. Gunn wants connections between films to feel exciting without making viewers feel obligated to follow every release.
With Man of Tomorrow, DC Studios has an opportunity to demonstrate how its long-term vision can bring characters and stories together while allowing every movie to stand on its own.
