DC Studios head and producer James Gunn shared his excitement for the upcoming movie, praising director James Watkins and the team behind the project. Gunn wrote that he “can’t wait” for audiences to see the film, which arrives in theaters in October.

The Clayface Final trailer puts the focus on Matt Hagen, a rising Hollywood star whose life is destroyed after becoming horribly disfigured. Desperate to restore his appearance and career, Matt turns to an experimental treatment that initially seems like a miracle. However, the procedure comes with horrifying consequences.
As Matt begins losing his grip on reality, his transformation sets him on a destructive path driven by revenge. The film explores his loss of identity and humanity while bringing a disturbing body horror element to the DC Universe.
Tom Rhys Harries Plays Matt Hagen
Tom Rhys Harries stars as Matt Hagen, the man who ultimately becomes Clayface. The character is one of the most recognizable villains from Batman’s rogues gallery and has appeared in numerous DC stories over the years.
Rather than simply presenting Clayface as a traditional superhero villain, the movie explores the tragic story behind Matt Hagen’s transformation and the circumstances that turn him into a monster.
‘Clayface’ Brings Body Horror to the DC Universe
Clayface has been described as DC Studios’ first major entry into the body horror genre. The movie explores themes including identity, humanity, corrosive love and the consequences of scientific ambition.
The official synopsis reads:
“Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured.”
After being abandoned by his team, Matt undergoes an advanced treatment that restores his former appearance. But the procedure unexpectedly begins affecting his mind, eventually sending him down a path of revenge.
James Watkins Directs ‘Clayface’
James Watkins, known for The Woman in Black and Speak No Evil, directs the movie from a screenplay written by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. Flanagan is known for projects including The Haunting of Hill House and Doctor Sleep, while Amini previously wrote the screenplay for Drive.
DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran previously described Clayface as an “incredible body horror film” that explores the origin of the classic Batman villain.
‘Clayface’ Cast and Release Date
Alongside Tom Rhys Harries, the Clayface cast includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella, Eddie Marsan, Nancy Carroll and Joshua James. The movie is rated R for strong bloody violence, gore, language, some nudity and brief drug use.
Directed by James Watkins, Clayface is scheduled to hit theaters on October 23, 2026.
