Mike Flanagan, who developed the script for the DCU’s highly anticipated Clayface movie, has opened up about the real reason he stepped away from directing the film. Even though he shaped the story from the beginning, he ultimately had to leave the project due to scheduling conflicts. Despite this, his recent comments show that he still cares deeply about the movie and remains eager to see the finished result.
Mike Flanagan Reveals Scheduling Challenges Behind His Exit
During Motor City Comic Con 2025, Flanagan finally addressed his surprising departure. He explained that DC Studios moved forward with production earlier than expected, which created an unavoidable conflict with his ongoing commitments. Since he could not split his time between both projects, he chose to honor the one he had already started.
He shared how much the project meant to him and how disappointed he felt when he realized he couldn’t continue.
“Clayface, I had so much fun developing that with Matt [Reeves], and then with James [Gunn] and Peter [Safran]. It was one of the great kind of sadnesses of my career that I’m so sorry that when it came time to make it, and they wanted to make this movie right away, I wasn’t available.”
Because the Clayface movie required immediate production, Flanagan had to make a difficult but necessary choice.
A Rare and Difficult Decision in Flanagan’s Career
Flanagan described the moment as extremely unusual for him. As a filmmaker known for close creative involvement in his projects, stepping away felt unfamiliar and uncomfortable. However, he had already committed to directing Carrie, and that responsibility took priority.
He explained,
“The only time this has ever happened to me where I was like, ‘I have to go make Carrie. There’s nothing I can do.’”
He added that it was the first time in his career where he had to hand a project over entirely:
“So I had to kind of do the thing that I’ve never had to do before, it’s like, ‘Well, here you go. Have fun making the movie and tell me how it goes.’”
This transparency gives fans a clearer understanding of how unpredictable Hollywood scheduling can be, especially within the fast-moving DCU.
The New Team Taking the Clayface Movie Forward
To keep the film on track, DC Studios brought in writer Hossein Amini to update and refine the script. Additionally, director James Watkins, best known for Speak No Evil, stepped in to helm the project. This ensured that the Clayface movie continued production without delays, even though the shift in leadership surprised many fans.
Moreover, Watkins’ darker style could fit well with the character of Clayface, who has always been one of Batman’s most tragic and psychologically complex villains. Therefore, the creative transition may actually help shape a bold new direction for the character.

Although he is no longer involved, Flanagan made it clear that he’s still excited about the movie and eager to see what the new team created. Since production recently wrapped, he is waiting just like fans to watch the final cut.
“I haven’t seen it. They just wrapped, I’m dying to see it. I can’t wait to see what they did with it.”
His enthusiasm shows that there is no bitterness—only curiosity and support for the project he helped start.
Clayface is a major addition to the DCU, especially because James Gunn’s new universe is leaning more into character-driven storytelling, psychological depth, and grounded narratives. While Clayface has often appeared as a monstrous villain, modern interpretations highlight his emotional struggles and tragic past—making him a perfect fit for the tone Gunn is establishing.
