DC has officially announced another exciting animated project. One of Superman’s most beloved characters will now headline their own television series. The reveal expands the studio’s growing animation slate and comes after the character’s recent rise in popularity among fans.
The announcement was made during the Studios and Warner Bros. Animation panel at the Annecy International Film Festival. The series is still in development. Even so, it has already attracted attention because of its unique premise and talented creative team.
DC Announces a Brand-New Krypto Animated Series
During the Annecy presentation, DC Studios officially unveiled a new animated television series centered on Krypto the Superdog.
The project is being created by C.H. Greenblatt, the acclaimed animator behind Chowder and Jellystone!. He also previously wrote episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants, making him a strong choice to bring Krypto’s energetic personality to life.
According to the official synopsis:
“When he’s not hanging out with Superman or Supergirl, Krypto tags along with a gang of misfit criminal wannabes who live down the block, and they soon discover he’s a ball of destructive, lovable energy worse than any of them! As he follows them into misadventures and poorly laid plans, Krypto’s pure nature slowly ends up redeeming them, whether they want it or not.”
Rather than focusing entirely on superhero battles, the series will blend comedy, heart, and lighthearted adventures. As a result, viewers can expect a fun and family-friendly story. It showcases Krypto’s playful personality and highlights his positive influence on those around him.
The official synopsis also suggests that the series will lean heavily into character-driven comedy. Instead of traditional superhero missions, Krypto joins an unlikely group of aspiring criminals. Their adventures create plenty of humorous moments while also delivering heartfelt stories.
DC Confirms the Series Is Separate From the DCU
Krypto has become increasingly important to DC’s future plans. However, the newly announced animated series will not take place within the official DC Universe (DCU) continuity.
Instead, the show will exist as its own standalone project. Because of that, the creative team has more freedom to tell original stories. They are not restricted by the events of the live-action universe. This creative flexibility often allows animated projects to experiment with different tones, visual styles, and storytelling approaches.
Consequently, fans should not expect the events of this series to directly connect with upcoming DCU films. Even so, the standalone format gives the creators more room to fully embrace Krypto’s comedic charm without worrying about larger continuity.
This approach has become increasingly common for DC’s animated content, allowing multiple versions of popular characters to coexist while offering audiences something fresh and unique.
Krypto’s Popularity Keeps Growing
The announcement comes shortly after Krypto’s live-action debut in Superman (2025), where the super-powered dog quickly became one of the film’s standout characters.
His journey is only beginning, however. Krypto will also appear in Supergirl, where Kara Zor-El is revealed to be his rightful owner. Furthermore, the character reportedly plays a major role in the upcoming film, which is based on Tom King’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
Meanwhile, DC and Warner Bros. Animation recently released the animated shorts Krypto Saves the Day!. Additionally, a second season titled Krypto & Supergirl: Capes for Hire is already in development.
Taken together, these projects show that DC is continuing to expand Krypto’s role across multiple forms of media.
More Animated Projects Are on the Way
Krypto’s new series was only one of several major announcements during DC Studios’ Annecy presentation.
The studio also officially revealed new animated projects centered on Absolute Batman and The Joker, further demonstrating its commitment to expanding its animation lineup. Rather than focusing solely on live-action films, DC continues to invest heavily in animation as a major part of its long-term strategy.
This balanced approach allows the studio to tell a wider variety of stories while introducing different audiences to its vast library of characters. Consequently, fans can look forward to even more animated adventures featuring both iconic heroes and unexpected fan favorites in the coming years.
At the time of writing, however, the Krypto animated series has not received an official release date. Nevertheless, the announcement alone has already generated considerable excitement, especially following Krypto’s recent appearances across multiple DC projects.
DC continues to invest heavily in animation, and Krypto’s new television series is another example of that strategy. While the show exists outside the main DCU continuity, its creative premise, experienced production team, and the character’s growing popularity make it one of the studio’s most exciting upcoming animated projects.
As DC continues to expand its slate with new shows and films, Krypto’s standalone adventure could become another fan favorite when it finally arrives.
