Rainn Wilson’s Passion for DCU’s Plastic Man

Wilson told Entertainment Weekly,

“I’ve hinted to James several times, like, ‘Hey man, you’ve got to do something with Plastic Man. He’s one of my favorite DC characters, and I loved him growing up.’”

His enthusiasm for the character is rooted in nostalgia, as he grew up enjoying the comedic and adventurous aspects of Plastic Man comics.

He further explained why the character resonates with him:

“He had a wicked sense of humor. The Plastic Man comics were very, very funny. That would be a fun one to unearth.”

The 59-year-old actor also clarified that he would enjoy watching a Plastic Man project even if he isn’t cast:

“I would be a fan even if I wasn’t in it. I would love to watch that… And play him.”

Who is DCU’s Plastic Man?

Plastic Man, whose real name is Patrick “Eel” O’Brian, first appeared in comics in 1941. Initially, he was a criminal, but after a chemical accident, he gained the ability to stretch his body. Eventually, he transformed into a superhero. Moreover, known for his humor and inventive crime-fighting, Plastic Man remains one of DC’s most unique and entertaining characters.

James Gunn’s Vision for the DC Universe

Rainn Wilson also praised Gunn’s approach to the DCU, particularly how he handled Nicholas Hoult’s portrayal of Lex Luthor in Superman. He noted,

“I thought that the LexCorp or LuthorCorp or whatever in the movie was great, how James created that as a big, monolithic, corporate entity. That was pretty cool.”

This demonstrates Wilson’s appreciation not only for the characters but also for the world-building Gunn is achieving in the revamped DCU.

The Future of DCU’s Plastic Man in Live-Action

Wilson’s interest highlights the potential for DCU’s Plastic Man to finally receive a live-action adaptation. With Gunn’s dedication to revitalizing lesser-known characters, fans may soon see Plastic Man brought to life with the humor and creativity that made the original comics so memorable. If cast, Wilson could bring both comedic timing and heartfelt admiration to the role, making it a standout addition to the DC Universe.

With fan enthusiasm already building and Gunn’s visionary approach, DCU’s Plastic Man could become a major highlight in upcoming DC projects.
