DCU’s Supergirl is heading toward a disappointing box office finish. Although the film has received widespread praise for Milly Alcock’s performance as Kara Zor-El, its theatrical run appears to be ending on a troubling note.
Supergirl Tracking for a Record-Low Fourth Weekend
According to current projections, Supergirl could earn around $1.4 million during its fourth weekend at the domestic box office. That would represent a 62% drop from its third weekend.
As a result, the film could set an unwanted record. Supergirl is currently tracking to record the lowest fourth-weekend domestic gross of any DCEU or DCU movie.
2023’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods previously held the record. Fury of the Gods. That film earned approximately $1.6 million during its fourth weekend. Therefore, Supergirl could fall below that figure.
Supergirl Expected to Finish Below $125 Million Worldwide
The film ended its third week with approximately $119.3 million worldwide. However, its current box office performance suggests that it may finish its theatrical run with less than $125 million globally.
That result would be a major disappointment for a major DC Studios release. The film reportedly needed between $300 million and $375 million to break even. Consequently, it is expected to lose more than $125 million during its theatrical run.
Competition from Toy Story 5 and Minions & Monsters has reportedly affected the film’s box office performance. In addition, the film’s official social media accounts have been largely inactive since June 29. The account last shared a promotional video for Funko Pops.
The Early Digital Release Could End the Film’s Theatrical Run
Supergirl is scheduled to arrive on Digital platforms on July 28. The early home release could further limit the film’s remaining theatrical potential.
By comparison, Superman opened to $125 million domestically and eventually finished its worldwide theatrical run with $618 million.
Previously, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn described the early Digital release of Superman as “very complicated.” He explained that the timing was designed to ensure audiences watched the movie before Peacemaker Season 2 arrived on HBO Max.
DC Studios Remains Confident in the DCU’s Future
Despite the film’s box office performance, DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has insisted that the DCU’s long-term plans remain on track.
“While ‘Supergirl’ didn’t meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in.”
Therefore, the disappointing box office results are unlikely to derail the wider DCU. In fact, Supergirl is expected to play an important role in Man of Tomorrow.
Additionally, James Gunn has hinted that Kara Zor-El could potentially co-star in the planned Wonder Woman reboot. As a result, Milly Alcock’s version of Supergirl could remain an important part of the franchise’s future.
Milly Alcock’s Performance Receives Widespread Praise
While the movie’s financial performance has disappointed, Milly Alcock has received widespread praise for her performance as Kara Zor-El.
However, the film has also received criticism for its writing, visuals, and use of cameos. One review described the movie as:
“Bad writing, gratuitous cameos, and uninspired visuals take us back to the bad old days of the DCEU in Supergirl, a showcase for the super-talented Milly Alcock, but Kryptonite to anyone who likes good superhero movies.”
Despite the mixed response, Alcock’s performance remains one of the film’s most positively discussed elements.
Supergirl’s Box Office Run Is Coming to an End
Ultimately, Supergirl appears to be heading toward a disappointing box office finish. The film could set a new low for a DC movie’s fourth-weekend domestic gross and may end its global theatrical run below $125 million.
Nevertheless, the character’s future in the DCU remains promising. With a potential role in Man of Tomorrow and possible involvement in the planned Wonder Woman reboot, Supergirl could still become a major part of DC Studios’ long-term plans.
