James Gunn released Superman worldwide on July 11, 2025. It is performing well at the box office, earning over $426 million globally. The film marks a new chapter for DC fans. It also features a surprise cameo by Milly Alcock as Supergirl, teasing her upcoming solo movie in the DCU.

However, fans have been questioning one particular moment—why didn’t Supergirl tell Superman about Jor-El’s true intentions?

Why Supergirl Stayed Silent About Jor-El

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, director James Gunn addressed this directly. When asked why Kara Zor-El didn’t reveal anything about Jor-El to Kal-El, Gunn responded:

“You’re assuming that everybody on Krypton is the same! And how would she know? She’s younger than him, so she wouldn’t know. She wouldn’t know anything about his parents.”

In Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe, Supergirl is actually younger than Superman, which is a reversal of their traditional roles in the comics. This change means that Kara Zor-El wouldn’t have been around to witness Krypton’s fall or understand Jor-El’s motives. So, her silence is not avoidance—it’s genuine lack of knowledge.

Supergirl’s Role Will Grow in the DCU

When asked if Supergirl would have a bigger role in Superman, Gunn confirmed it.

“Yeah, it was always that. When I took this job, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow was, like, number one for me of the things I knew I wanted to do. Ana Nogueira just killed the script right away… [Supergirl is] even rougher in the film than she is in the comic, I think.”

Supergirl’s story is far from over. In fact, it’s just beginning. DC is already developing her solo movie, which will release on June 26, 2026. According to Gunn, this version of Kara will be tougher and even more hardened than her comic counterpart.

The character’s brief but impactful appearance in Superman was never meant to give fans all the answers—but rather, to raise new questions. James Gunn’s clarification reveals that her silence was rooted in the new DCU timeline and narrative direction.

As her own journey unfolds in 2026, we’ll likely learn much more about Kara Zor-El, her struggles, and how she fits into this newly evolving universe.
