At the red-carpet premiere of Superman, DC Studios head James Gunn was asked a big question. How many Superman Movies does he plan to make in the DC Universe? His response was cryptic—but still exciting for fans.
“I have them all,” Gunn said with a grin, dodging the question either playfully or intentionally.
Gunn Shares His Vision Behind Superman Movies
Though he didn’t confirm a number, Gunn spoke about the tone and creative approach behind the new Superman movies, clearly showing his passion for the source material.
“This is the most comic book movie I’ve ever made by far. Maybe the first real comic book movie I’ve made. Because I really am influenced by the comics. And I wanted to have people experience the joy I felt when I was reading comic books as a kid in this movie.”
This shows that Gunn’s approach to Superman is not only faithful to the comics, but also emotionally resonant. He wants audiences to feel the same wonder he felt growing up with these stories.
Will There Be a Direct Sequel to Superman?
Interestingly, Gunn has made it clear that a direct sequel may not be next. In an interview with GQ, he also dismissed exaggerated box office expectations:
“It doesn’t need to be as big of a situation as people are saying… That \$700 million number? Just complete and utter nonsense.”
Later in June 2025, Gunn shared that his next project could still involve Superman, though maybe not in a conventional sequel format:
“What I’m working on is in some way… I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes. But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily.”
Still, fans won’t be waiting long to see Superman again.
“You will see Superman again in less than two years.”
So while the structure of upcoming Superman movies remains unclear, Gunn confirmed that David Corenswet’s Superman will be back sooner than expected.
Superman — starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult — releases in theaters on July 11, 2025, officially kicking off the DCU under James Gunn’s leadership.
