James Gunn Celebrates a Brutal Flash Villain Ahead of Their DCU Debut!

DCU’s New Flash

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn is once again stirring excitement among fans. This time, however, it involves one of the most brutal villains in Flash history. Recently, James Gunn marked the 67th anniversary of Gorilla Grodd’s comic debut with a tribute that immediately grabbed attention across social media.

Naturally, fans began speculating about how this Flash villain will factor into the larger DCU narrative. And given Gunn’s careful planning of DC Studios’ Chapter 1 slate, this celebration may not be random at all.

James Gunn Flash Villain Tribute Highlights Grodd’s Brutality

On social media, James Gunn commemorated Gorilla Grodd’s first appearance in The Flash #106. Notably, Gunn emphasized Grodd’s savage violence and powerful mind-control abilities — traits that have defined the villain for decades.

Meanwhile, Gorilla Grodd has long stood as one of The Flash’s most dangerous enemies. As a hyper-intelligent telepathic gorilla from Gorilla City, Grodd is not only physically dominant but also capable of manipulating minds on a massive scale.

Because of that, Gunn’s focus on Grodd’s brutality suggests that the DCU version may lean heavily into the character’s darker roots.

Grodd Confirmed for the Jimmy Olsen DCU Series

Importantly, DC Studios has already confirmed Grodd’s DCU debut. The upcoming HBO Max series centered on Jimmy Olsen will feature the villain, and Skyler Gisondo stars in the lead role.

Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda developed the series as a true-crime-style spin-off set within the broader DCU. Therefore, Grodd’s involvement immediately raises questions.

James Gunn Hints at Bigger DCU Plans

Interestingly, James Gunn has previously stated that he has “other plans” for Grodd. That comment alone suggests the character’s appearance in the Jimmy Olsen series may not be a one-off cameo.

Furthermore, Grodd briefly appeared in a future vision in Creature Commandos, where the scene showed him conquering the world. Although that moment was only a glimpse, it hinted at enormous ambitions that could still unfold in the DCU. As a result, fans now believe Grodd may eventually become a major cross-project threat within DC Studios’ interconnected universe.

At present, there is no officially announced DCU project for The Flash. However, Grodd’s growing presence may signal that plans are quietly developing behind the scenes. After all, introducing a major Flash villain without a long-term strategy would be unusual. Therefore, James Gunn’s tribute could be more than just a celebration — it may be subtle groundwork for a larger narrative arc.

If Grodd evolves into a world-conquering threat, the DCU might eventually require the Scarlet Speedster to step back into the spotlight. James Gunn is known for planting seeds long before they bloom. Consequently, even a simple anniversary tribute can carry deeper meaning.

By spotlighting Grodd’s brutality and telepathic dominance, Gunn may be signaling the tone of future DCU villains. Instead of comedic antagonists, we could see darker, more psychologically complex threats. Ultimately, James Gunn’s Flash villain tease has reignited speculation across the fandom. And with Chapter 1 of DC Studios just beginning to unfold, Grodd’s role may only be getting started.
